Frenchy Bordagaray

[edit]

Bordagaray without his mustache

  • ... that in 1936, Frenchy Bordagaray (pictured) became the first baseball player to wear a mustache since 1914, and the last until 1972?

Created/expanded by Muboshgu (talk). Self nom at 02:17, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

  • More specifically, it went from 1288 prose characters to 5893, so another 547 would bring it up to 5× expansion. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 06:51, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
  • I wasn't clear on whether it has to be 5x expanded in characters or words, or both. Words are expanded 206 to 1021. I'll add some more to remove any ambiguities. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:35, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
  • Characters are now expanded 5x. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:00, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
  • 5x expansion confirmed. The article is insufficiently referenced, though. The DYK requirement is to have at least one inline reference per paragraph, but many of the paragraphs have zero references. See rule D2. Schwede66 19:25, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
  • Fixed. Every paragraph now has a reference. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:31, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
  • The hook is, I suspect completely factually incorrect: are we really suggesting that nobody who played baseball, anywhere at any level between 1914 and 1972 other than this chap had a moustache? If you're going to use the hook, I'd suggest tightening it to "Major League Baseball player". However, I'm not really sure if it is appropriate anyway: the source says "Wally Schang may have been the last one to grow a mustache before Bordagaray, when he caught for the 1914 Philadelphia Athletics." Harrias talk 07:57, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
  • It's actually very well accepted that facial hair, which was highly prevalent in MLB around the turn of the 20th century, became unacceptable. That's why he was made to shave it, and why it was a big deal when the A's grew them in the 1970s. Sources back up that Schang was the last player documented as wearing a mustache regularly. Timeframes on how long exactly Frenchy wore his are unclear. I can accept that the equivocation in the source might require a rewrite. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:00, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
  • ALT1 ... that Frenchy Bordagaray (pictured) grew a mustache in 1936, which was likely to have been the only mustache worn in Major League Baseball between 1914 and 1972?
  • Looks good to me now. Would also accept "which was likely to have been" if you want to make it a little stronger. Good to go. Harrias talk 16:03, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
  • Yes, that sounds better than "may have been". Thanks for working with me on this. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:08, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
