Gui Minhai

[edit]

Created/expanded by Ohconfucius (talk). Self-nominated at 23:29, 27 November 2016 (UTC).

  • Newly promoted GA, long enough, hooks cited, no copyvio (copyvio detector is flagging MEP Diane James's website, but that is an uncredited copy from Wikipedia) or other policy problems found, QPQ done. I don't like the original hook, too much of an Easter egg. Passing for ALT1. SpinningSpark 19:22, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Returned from prep per discussion at WT:DYK. Could the page nominator address this issue, and suggest a better hook? Yoninah (talk) 01:15, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
  • "that two Swedish citizens, Gui Minhai and Peter Dahlin, appeared in video confessions broadcast by China Central Television within two days of each other in January 2016?"
  • This is mildly interesting but it would be much better to focus on just Gui Minhai, his disappearance, his being held in custody for three months and actually what he supposedly confessed to, because the article makes it clear that the confessions where highly dubious. This hook doesn't seem to cover any of that adequately, and is actually much less interesting for it. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:48, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
  • It's not a problem if this isn't resolved, I'll just take it to ERRORS when it appears on the main page. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:53, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
  • i suggested those two hooks as being potentially more "interesting" but i am open to suggestions. Here are a few that I have thought up in the meantime.  Ohc ¡digame! 10:32, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Alt2: that... Gui Minhai, a Swedish national who disappeared in Thailand, reappeared three months later on Chinese television news confessing to having returned to China after 11 years on the run due to remorse over killing a girl in a car accident ?
  • Alt3: that... Gui Minhai, who disappeared in Thailand and three months later confessed to killing a girl whilst driving under the influence, has been held for over a year pending another criminal investigation ?
  • Alt4: that... Gui Minhai, whose four other bookseller colleagues also disappeared in mysterious circumstances, reappeared three months later on Chinese television news confessing to killing a girl whilst driving under the influence in 2003?
  • Alt5: that... Swedish national Gui Minhai, who Thai officials said never left their country, said three months later on Chinese television that "Returning to the Chinese mainland and surrendering was my personal choice and had nothing to do with anyone else" ?

(ec)

  • Thanks for the new alts. They are all a bit long, though. I like ALT5, but it doesn't mention that he disappeared. I wonder what you think of these tweaks:
  • ALT4a: ... that Gui Minhai, whose four other bookseller colleagues also disappeared in mysterious circumstances, reappeared three months later on Chinese television confessing to killing a girl in a 2003 car accident?
  • Or:
  • ALT0a: ... that Gui Minhai, a Swedish national who disappeared from his Thailand holiday home in 2015, reappeared three months later on Chinese television confessing to killing a girl in a 2003 car accident? Yoninah (talk) 16:53, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
Last two ALTs ... killing = murdering? Conflict with "accident". Does it mean manslaughter? In the article, this doesn't make sense: "Upon obtaining his PhD in 1996, Gui's wife is also a naturalised Swedish citizen." And "Last heard from on 15 October, according to his colleagues, Gui disappeared from his apartment in Pattaya, Thailand on 17 October," – how is that logical? Tony (talk) 11:00, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Thanks for spotting the inconsistencies, @Tony1:. As to the death, it was a DUI incident for which Gui received a 2-yr suspended sentence. In most jurisdictions, it would be classed as manslaughter, but the Regime appears to want to sell it as a hit-and-run murder case, though none of the sources uses the term "homicide". There is little that is logical with the case. @Yoninah: I'm OK with both your alts, but marginally prefer the first as this links in the disappearance of his four colleagues. BTW, I tweaked the link relating to the colleagues' disappearance. - Ohc ¡digame! 12:30, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
  • @Ohconfucius: I agree, ALT4a is better. I suggest adding in the DUI charge this way:
  • ALT4b: ... that Gui Minhai, whose four other bookseller colleagues also disappeared in mysterious circumstances, reappeared three months later on Chinese television confessing to killing a girl in a 2003 DUI accident?
  • But I cannot find this fact mentioned in the video confession section, which just says that Gui wanted to "solve his own problems". Yoninah (talk) 13:26, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Thanks for spotting that omission. Now fixed. - Ohc ¡digame! 14:48, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Thank you. I'm going ahead and approving ALT4b along with the DUI addition which I added from your ALT3. The fact about the confession is verified and cited inline; the fact about the disappearance of the other booksellers is from a foreign-language ref and AGF. Rest of review per Spinningspark. ALT4b good to go. Yoninah (talk) 19:26, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
  • 4a looks ok. Does it satisfy TRM's issue? Tony (talk) 12:09, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
  • I believe so. 4a is now 4b, and approved. Yoninah (talk) 13:32, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
