Harrison Fitch

Created by Topshelver (talk). Self-nominated at 22:57, 15 February 2021 (UTC).

  • The article is new enough and long enough. This is a very interesting piece of history. (It reminds me very much of the 1934 Willis Ward incident.) Thank you for creating the article. However, the hook is inaccurate insofar as the rival (the Coast Guard Academy) did not "bar" Fitch from participating. The Coast Guard officials refused to play if Fitch participated. UConn could have said, "FU", and taken the game by default. Instead, the UConn coach agreed to bench Fitch for the game. If you propose an alternate hook that more accurately reports the circumstance, I would be pleased to conduct a full review. Cbl62 (talk) 15:12, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
@Cbl62: Good eye! I just added an ALT DYK that I think reflects your guidance. Please take another look. Topshelver (talk) 17:51, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
@Topshelver: Would you be OK with something like this?
* alt2 ... that the UConn student body voted 169-7 to fire the basketball coach after he benched Harrison Fitch because a rival team refused to play against an African-American? Cbl62 (talk) 19:12, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
@Cbl62: I like it; maybe "a rival team refused to play against an African American"?
I like it and made the change to alt2. Good news: I think you now have a solid hook. Bad news: Since I helped develop the hook, I can't approve it. So I'm turning it over for someone to do the full review. Cbl62 (talk) 20:56, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Alt2 hook is properly sourced. DYK requirements for length and recent creation are met. No copyvios detected. That such a racist incident occurred in New London CT is quite shocking, although the article provides an explanation. This article would be very appropriate for Black History Month and consideration really should be given to placing the DYK in Prep 2 or Prep 3 before the end of February.
