Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra[edit]

  • ... that the first attempt to build the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (pictured) resulted in the demolition of the nearly-completed structure? Source (in English here): "Work on the first cathedral started in 1719 but after cracks appeared in the structure it was decided to demolish the building in 1755 and to start over again." ([1]) and in more detail but in Russian "В 1744 почти законченную постройку велено разобрать до „подошвы“, что и было исполнено в 1753–1755 под смотрением Ивана Росси." - "In 1744 the almost finished building was ordered to be disassembled to the "foot" [foundations], which was done in 1753–1755 under the watch of Ivan Rossi." ([2])

Hook is mostly verifiable in English and AGF with Russian for the full line; fact is interesting and neutral. Page passes DYK (created April 23), image is taken by a Commons user and checks out with CC BY-SA 4.0. User completed QPQ so this is good to go!
