Hou Yao[edit]

Hou Yao

  • ... that Chinese film pioneer Hou Yao (pictured) was murdered by the Japanese in Singapore?

Created by Zanhe (talk). Self-nominated at 09:11, 11 June 2015 (UTC).

  • Why is this an interesting hook fact? It's completely out of context. I suggest something more along the lines of his career:
  • ALT1: ... that Hou Yao (pictured), a pioneer Chinese director and screenwriter, wrote the first theory book on Chinese filmmaking in 1925? Yoninah (talk) 00:42, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
  • I completely disagree, Yoninah. Hou Yao's death in one of the most infamous massacres of the Pacific War is the most shocking aspect of his life. How is that out of context? It's like saying the mention of Anne Frank as a Holocaust victim is out of context. ALT1 is far less interesting. Also ping Khanate General. -Zanhe (talk) 00:00, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
  • Sorry I wasn't clear. Saying a Chinese man was killed by the Japanese in Singapore doesn't give us any idea of why. He could have been a tourist caught in street gang fire, for all we know. If you want to compare it to Anne Frank, it's like writing, "... that the German girl Anne Frank moved to Amsterdam and was killed in Poland". If you want to use the original hook, fine, but please give us some context of why he was killed there. Yoninah (talk) 00:12, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the clarification. Let's add the Sook Ching massacre to provide the context:
  • ALT2 ... that Chinese film pioneer Hou Yao (pictured) was murdered by the Japanese during the Sook Ching massacre in Singapore? -Zanhe (talk) 00:37, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
  • That's very good, and worthy of a lead slot! Foreign-language hook ref AGF and cited inline. ALT2 good to go. Yoninah (talk) 00:43, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
