Joan Feynman[edit]

Joan Feynman

  • Comment: Her birthday is March 31 so would be extra appropriate to DYK-it on that date, if possible. Sources of the hook are in the opening and Career sections.

5x expanded by Girona7 (talk). Self nominated at 19:43, 30 March 2013 (UTC).

  • As much as I would like to be able to green light this for Ms. Feynman's birthday, it doesn't meet the DYK criteria. The prose was 1281 bytes of "readable prose" (RP) before expansion and now is 2560 bytes RP. In order for this to make DYK it needs to either be a fivefold expansion (6405 bytes RP), or have been totally unsourced before you started working on it. It meets every criteria except for size though. I'm very sorry. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:17, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
  • I'd like to give the author some more time to try to further expand this. Hopefully there's enough source material to sufficiently expand. It obviously won't make it in time for the birthday, but we get so few DYKs for female scientists, I hope this one will make it. I'll notify the nominator. • Thanks to both of you for your help. I'll add further to the text and post again here when I'm finished. Girona7 (talk) 01:39, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Hi again. Okay, I believe I have added enough detail to the heart of the article to pass the 5x-addition threshold. I'm not 100% sure how to calculate the RP byte size, however, so please let me know if I'm still short. Really appreciate your assistance! Girona7 (talk) 05:10, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Sorry for all the false starts, everyone. I have added some more and now also confirmed using the DYKcheck that the article has passed the 5x expansion mark. Please let me know if there's anything else I should do... Thanks :) Girona7 (talk) 22:52, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
  • That's great news! I wanted so much for this to succeed that I had started researching her myself to see if I could supply the remaining necessary expansion. I'm so glad you were able to do it yourself. Congratulations! MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 23:11, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

It is! DYKCheck confirms 5X expansion. — Maile (talk) 23:05, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

  • Thanks very much! Please note I just made a minor adjustment to the text of the DYK to be clearer about her actual contribution. My understanding is that she determined that it was the magnetic field of the solar wind that's responsible for the auroras. The source for this is her son's Popular Science article, which is in the reflist.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Girona7 (talkcontribs) 23:35, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
