Jose Yao Campos[edit]

  • ... that businessman Jose Yao Campos admitted in 1986 to having organized 40 different shell companies through which Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos could hide his wealth? https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1986/03/30/the-philippines-anatomy-of-a-looting/620251dc-cffe-46f3-be40-a248f501882c/?utm_term=.d70cfe4777d5 Rusakoff 1986: “Campos, who made a fortune in the Philippine pharmaceutical industry with the help of decrees by Marcos, recently confided in a statement to the new Manila government that he organized 40 shell companies to hide Marcos' wealth.”
    • ALT1:... that Jose Yao Campos made a 1986 deal with the Philippines’ Presidential Commission on Good Government to return PhP 2.5 Billion in real estate which he held on behalf of Ferdinand Marcos? https://www.rappler.com/newsbreak/in-depth/123667-marcos-cronies-compromise Lustre 2016: A friend of the dictator, Campos surrendered to the PCGG the 197 titles representing pieces of real estate property in Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Bataan and Baguio City, and P250 million ($5.3 million) in cash. The pieces of real estate property have a combined value of over P2.5 billion ($52.5 million).
    • ALT2:... that in 1986, businessman Jose Yao Campos was the first of the Cronies of Ferdinand Marcos to return what he said were Marcos-owned assets to the Philippines, in return for immunity? https://www.rappler.com/newsbreak/in-depth/123667-marcos-cronies-compromise Lustre 2016: “Months after its creation in 1986, the Presidential Commission Good Government (PCGG) saw tangible results of its quest for the return of the illegal assets of the Marcoses and cronies. It negotiated the first compromise deal with crony Jose Yao Campos, a Chinese Filipino entrepreneur who owned the controlling interest of United Laboratories Inc., a major drug firm, for the return of the Marcos assets listed under his name. Campos, low key and unassuming, was probably the most cooperative among the known Marcos cronies. Unlike other cronies who chose to slug it out with the post-Marcos government, Campos cooperated fully in surrendering the Marcos assets under his name. Marcos used him mainly as caretaker of those illegal assets.”
  • Reviewed: This is only my third nomination for DYK. So I'm still excempted, although I've reviewed 2 DYKs already (Chang and Eng Bunker and Aya Hirano)
  • Comment: This would be ideal for publication on September 11, the date of birth of former Philippine Dictator Ferdiand Marcos (b, 1917).

  • Full review to follow, but right now the article is in need of reorganization. The lede is very long, almost as long if not longer than the actual article text. It needs to be changed to a summary, while the other parts could be moved to the body. Some minor copyedits should also be made (like using emdashes instead of dashes). Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 01:48, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll try to start addressing issues as soon as possible. - Alternativity (talk) 02:22, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
  • @Narutolovehinata5: Heya. Quick edit, I just straightout removed the article overview from the lede and left just the first paragraph stinger. (To be honest, I'm a bit loath to do so, which is why a month went by without me realizing I'd sat on this article for so long, hehe.) I've also moved the first instances of the affected references out of the lede and into the body. Em dash fixes might take me a while to implement, but I'll spot 'em eventually, I suppose. Will update when done. - Alternativity (talk) 01:32, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
Alrighty then, I think I've fixed the em-dashes? I just copy-pasted the character I saw in Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Dashes, since I don't know how to do it on a keyboard. Could you check if I got the em-dash character right, though? And whether I applied it correctly, since it's not a styleguide rule I usually pay much attention to?- Alternativity (talk) 01:41, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
The article looks better now, but some of the references still have errors. They need to be individually fixed before this can proceed. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 01:31, 28 September 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. The sourcing looks better now, but the next issue is that the article has not been wikified much. Meaning, the article lacks hyperlinks to other articles. @Alternativity: Once this is addressed I'll do the full review. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 12:46, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
@Narutolovehinata5: - Did some wikilinking. Not extensive, I'm afraid. Turns out there's not much on WP about the Philippine Pharma Industry and introducing links to topics in that area would result in a bunch of redlinks. :S -Alternativity (talk) 13:33, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Noted. It appears that he was inolved in founding UNILAB. UNILAB happens to be a sponsor of several conferences that my physician parents have been invited to, in addition to them being the supplier of many medicines to my parents and others. Although this link is admittedly weak, I still feel it might count as a COI; as such, I'm voluntarily withdrawing my participation in this nomination and requesting another reviewer finishing this review. • @Narutolovehinata5: - Noted with thanks. :D Thank you specifically for advice that has significantly improved the quality of the article. :D - Alternativity (talk) 05:20, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
  • @Alternativity: Due to the length of time this has been waiting, I came here to review it for you; However—very sorry, but there are still a few things (nothing major I think) that need clearing up. Firstly, the lead is now—ironically!—too short  :) MOS:LEADLENGTH suggests that for an article such as this with fewer than 15,000 characters, a lead of one or two paragraphs is desirable; I think that implicitly means more than one sentence! But just inserting a summary sentence of each of the body's paragraphs would easily sort this out. Secondly, although everything seems well sourced, I have to ask about the first para of the "Early life" section ("every boy's dream"); the reference at the end presumably sources the entire paragraph—but that quote does not seem to be mentioned anywhere in the source? And when you do find the source for the quote, it needs to be directly behind the quote, nt at the end of the paragraph. Thirdly, the references aren't required in the lead at all, as long as the material it covers is subsequently covered n the body and sourced there: the lead is just a summary of what's to come, see WP:CITELEAD.
Lastly, and this is just my opinion, I suggest running with ALT0 or ALT2; ALT1 seems a trifle clunky. What say ye? ——SerialNumber54129 08:08, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
    • @Serial Number 54129: - Heya, thanks! :D (1) I've tried to expand the lede with the shortest paragraph I could come up with. Would you mind looking at whether it retains the NPOV I've tried to maintain throughout the article? (I find it funny to admit, but that's largely why I tend to write long; when I write short, I get worried I'm not providing enough context to maintain NPOV. Tried my best here though.)(2) I found the problem regarding the quote; it's an article by the same author in the same publication, which I think caused confusion during all the cleanup efforts. Or maybe I conflated the two articles when I first wrote the section.(3) References removed. :D (Alts) I agree Alt1 was clunky. Hehe. I'd prefer Alt0 of course, but Alt2 works as well. Or if you really like the fact cited in Alt1, maybe there's a way to rephrase it? But I feel Alt0 would work best. Cheers! - Alternativity (talk) 04:58, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
  • -Article is new enough (created five days prior to this nomination); long enough (7957 chars), neutral, fully-cited, and with no close paraphrasing or copyvios (Earwig shows 59% (!!!) but that's mostly quotes, particularly the long blockquote in the middle); Hook (sticking with ALT0 per the creator's preference) is well within character limit (171 chars), accurate, sourced, and surely of general interest, as anything to do with the Marcos millions is bound to be; corruption, it would seem is universal.
    Passing ALT0: come wit it now. ——SerialNumber54129 08:24, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
