Kayla Clarke[edit]

Kayla Clarke

  • Perhaps I'm just not familiar enough with the sport, but neither source says she has "swimming scholarships". Rather, she just is involved with both programs. Please correct me if I'm missing something. Otherwise, the length, date, and references look good. Ruby 2010/2013 03:57, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Being unable to confirm the swimming scholarship is a serious problem; I also don't see any mention of a scholarship in either source, though she does participate in these programs. Laura, can you please clear this up? BlueMoonset (talk) 00:53, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
    • Sources have been added to support this. (She got $20,000) Hawkeye7 (talk) 08:52, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Queensland scholarship is now supported. What the ASC source says, however, is that she received a $20,000 DAS. A DAS is a direct grant, not a scholarship, according to this: "The Australian Government Direct Athlete Support (DAS) scheme, administered by the Australian Sports Commission, provides direct financial assistance to our world-class athletes in sports where Australia has a successful track record." Nothing about it being a $20K scholarship specifically to attend the AIS, though some (much? most?) of the money may in fact go for her AIS expenses. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:25, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
    • What AIS expenses? The sources say she has an AIS scholarship. There are no fees. AIS scholarships cover everything while you are there., and the only way you attend AIS is on a scholarship. She also received a DAS grant. This is something different, and it too is sourced. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:49, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Sorry, I don't see the AIS scholarship in any of the four sources for the scholarship sentence. Both Ruby and I ran into this problem: sources 1 and 7 say she's in the two programs, but nothing more. Laura added two new sources after my original comment asking for supporting sources for QAS and AIS scholarships: source 8, which is a list of athletes on scholarship at Queensland and includes Kayla, clearly establishing her scholarship there, and source 9: the DAS grant. My assumption under the circumstances was that since 8 covered QAS, 9 was meant to cover AIS. As far as I could see, 9 didn't do the job: what is needed is an equivalent to source 8, only for AIS. Since I didn't see anything about an AIS scholarship, I was extrapolating from the one new thing I did see, the DAS grant, which was sourced for that sentence and was presumably relevant to it, otherwise why add it at all? Thus, my (incorrect) guess about the DAS grant being sourced to support the AIS scholarship in some manner. The statements you've just made here about AIS, such as "the only way you attend AIS is on a scholarship", would need to be specifically sourced if you're relying on them to support the statement that she has a scholarship there. As the AIS scholarship is a hook fact, and therefore considered (by DYK at least) to be an "extraordinary claim", an explicit source is needed. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:20, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
  • I've just made a modification to that sentence in the article, to reflect the specific information in the sources. As a result, I'd like to propose a new ALT that I think is less bland than "is involved with":
Fine. Hawkeye7 (talk) 06:54, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
ALT2 checks out. Secretlondon (talk) 20:50, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
