Kore Ilbo

  • ... that the formerly Soviet Korean newspaper Kore Ilbo was once known as the Leninist Banner, and is the oldest active Korean newspaper outside of Korea? Source: The Kore Ilbo is a Korean newspaper first published in 1923 as the March 1st Newspaper and later changed its name to Seonbong(1923–1937), the Leninist Banner(1938–1990), and finally to Kore Ilbo(1991 to present). It is a newspaper of the Korean diaspora with the longest history of publication [1]

Overall: @Jacoblee628: Very nice article! I've been following this GA review. The hook is interesting, however, I'm concerned about the translation of "레닌기치" as "Leninist Banner" in English (This source, for example simply transliterates it to Lenin Kichi - and I would be more inclined to translate that as "Banner of Lenin"). Is there an English language source supporting this name (or a Korean language source mentioning this English name)? In all other aspects, hook was verified.

Assuming sources for "Leninist Banner" can be found, I made a few grammatical/formatting changes to the proposed hook below and replaced formerly Soviet Korean with the better descriptor of Koryo-saram. Let me know what you think about the following hook:

ALT1 ... that the Koryo-saram newspaper Kore Ilbo was once known as the Leninist Banner and is the oldest active Korean newspaper outside of Korea? :3 F4U (they/it) 01:55, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
omg you're right... That translation was supposed to be a placeholder but I forgot to change it. I eventually somehow convinced myself that "Leninist" was most common. Just changed article to what I've since most commonly seen. Would it make sense to change the DYK text to "was once known as Lenin's Banner"? Jacoblee628 (talk) 16:33, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
@Jacoblee628: That sounds good! Approving the following hook:
ALT2 ... that the Koryo-saram newspaper Kore Ilbo was once known as Lenin's Banner and is the oldest active Korean newspaper outside of Korea?
