Lady Henry Somerset

[edit]

Lady Henry Somerset in 1884

  • ... that Lady Henry Somerset (pictured) scandalised society in 1870s by revealing her husband's homosexuality, but was later voted the most desirable first female prime minister of the United Kingdom?

  • ALT1: ... that Lady Isabella Cocks (pictured) scandalised society in 1870s by revealing her husband's homosexuality, but was later voted the most desirable first female prime minister of the United Kingdom?
Her maiden name might attract more attention. After all, the goal is to arouse the reader's interest, isn't it? Surtsicna (talk) 18:46, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
  • All ok for either, hook in book. I've removed "the" before "society". Or do both hooks give the impression she was the "first female prime minister of the United Kingdom"? Johnbod (talk) 20:12, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
    • I'm not sure. Is there a way it can be phrased more clearly? Anyway, thanks for helping with grammar! Surtsicna (talk) 20:27, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
      • Maybe "but was later voted the best choice to be the United Kingdom's first female prime minister?". Add "by a newpaper's readers" if there's room. Johnbod (talk) 20:39, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
        • Yes, that would be an improvement. There is no room for "by a newpaper's readers", though. Surtsicna (talk) 20:48, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Alt1 points to a redirect. I have no knowledge what DYK guidelines apply to this.. It might be a non-issue. But I wanted to mention it just in case. — Maile (talk) 00:25, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
  • If she was married at the time, she was no longer Lady Isabella Somers-Cocks (not just Cocks). And both hooks do indeed lead one to conclude that she was indeed prime minister at the time—that was my reading, even though I knew it had to be wrong if referring to the UK—so they're both problematic in my view. I suggest Johnbod's variant on the original hook, with a slight flip around 1870s that avoids the need to insert a "the" (which would be 202 characters minus "pictured"), which I'll call ALT2 (and is 195 characters minus "pictured"):
  • ALT2: ... that Lady Henry Somerset (pictured) scandalised 1870s society by revealing her husband's homosexuality, but was later voted the best choice to be the United Kingdom's first female prime minister? —BlueMoonset (talk) 00:56, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Yes, that seems much better. Surtsicna (talk) 11:14, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Great. I've struck the earlier versions of the hook, and I'll ping Johnbod to get a formal approval of ALT2, after which this should be ready for promotion. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:52, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
  • ALT2 fine too. Johnbod (talk) 16:15, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
