Leila Velez

  • ... that one of the reasons Leila Velez has for expanding her Brazilian beauty salon company is to fight the "deeply entrenched racism" against black women and their natural afro-textured hair? Source: "Nothing like a good hairdo to fight deeply entrenched racism in one of the world’s emerging economic giants..."In Brazil there is cultural baggage among black women who do not like their hair because it is not straight, which is the best known standard of beauty,” said Almeida, who co-authored a thesis on Beleza Natural and its support for the bottom of the social pyramid. “And that is the difference with Beleza Natural, which does not want to straighten hair. It wants to relax it, to soften the curls. It says this to a woman: ‘You are beautiful because you are black. You are beautiful because you have hair like this.’”" ("Hairdos help to fight racism for Brazil’s low-income women" - Taipei Times)

  • Having read this I figure I’ll go ahead and review. Neutrally written and adequately referenced; long and new enough; no Earwig pings. I would suggest adjusting the hook as I did in the entry because the quote is from someone other than Velez. Perhaps:
ALT1: ... that one of Leila Velez's reasons for expanding her Brazilian beauty salon company is to fight racism against black women and their natural afro-textured hair?
How does that strike you Silver seren? I’m open to more ideas as well.
As an additional note to a promoter, technically the source cited here does not mention it as one of her goals (only that it is one of the effects noted by others); however in the entry a second source does verify this as one of her aims. Innisfree987 (talk) 20:36, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
I'm fine with the hook change. SilverserenC 20:54, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Great, all set then. Innisfree987 (talk) 20:58, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
