Michael Volle

Created by LouisAlain (talk) and Gerda Arendt (talk). Nominated by Gerda Arendt (talk) at 14:37, 17 February 2020 (UTC).

  • New enough, long enough, neutrally written, well referenced. As all sources are foreign-language, unable to check for close paraphrasing. QPQ done.
  • I feel like the hook reads like a resume. You have an interesting fact in the article that would appeal to a wider audience, that he now "works freelance"; perhaps you could weave that into the hook? Or else just limit it to the Der Faust prize, and please tell me that it's a theatre prize so I don't have to go clicking on it (I thought it had something to do with Faust). Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:25, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
  • If you think it's too much, drop one of the opera houses, but the two roles - read the stories - are among the most humanly touching one can portray, and say so much more about him than freelance work, which he has in common with almost everybody else in the field, begin Jessye Norman. Would you say about her that she works freelance? I am looking for a hook for her, seriously. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:30, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
  • Gerda, we non-music aficionados only know about these roles what you tell us in the hook. If you would add a few adjectives to describe each role, the hook would be better. As of now the only thing that seems worth salvaging is:
  • ALT1: ... that the baritone Michael Volle won the Der Faust theatre prize for his portrayal of Wozzeck at the Bavarian State Opera? Yoninah (talk) 21:03, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Sigh. While The Met and the Bayreuth Festival are known worldwide, I'm not sure about the Bavarian. The construction "the Der Faust" doesn't work, because "der" means "the" already. Here's a review of the Hans Sachs in "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" in Bayreuth, by Barrie Kosky, the first Jewish director in Bayreuth. who staged the charavters as the Wagner family: "The host, Wagner, remains as himself for a long time, observing the events, before switching to Hans Sachs halfway through the act." That is too much detail for the hook, and even for the article, but received world-wide attention, and people who followed will know, and others may not care about the singer. We had already a hook about the Beckmesser in the production, Johannes Martin Kränzle. - I'm away from home for a funeral. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:48, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
  • I'm sorry, I'm having trouble following your explanation. Let's just go with your first idea to drop one of the opera houses. Foreign-language hook refs AGF and cited inline. Rest of review above. Good to go. Yoninah (talk) 20:51, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
  • ... as long as you keep Bayreuth. - In a nutshell: that was one of the best-known productions of recent years, known even by people who don't care about opera, but Wagner's relations to Jewish performers. Did you know that I'll see a new Kosky production tomorrow? ... that the psalm recited at said funeral was 31? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:38, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
