Monachus

[edit]
Hawaiian monk seal
Hawaiian monk seal
  • ... that there are less than 2,400 monk seals in the world....?

5x expanded by Dunkleosteus77 (talk). Self-nominated at 00:22, 17 January 2016 (UTC).

  • @Dunkleosteus77:This article is new enough in it expansion. It is large enough and 5x is verified. The image is used and copyright is free. Correct person credited. However the hook is not confirmed. The article says the number is 2400, but the hook says less. The sources either say under 1100 or under 1300, so it looks as if the writer added the two numbers together! Otherwise the article is sourced on every paragraph. I found this source, and it says there're 600 in the Mediterranean and 1,100 in the Hawaiian islands. I'll change it in the article.   User:Dunkleosteus77 |push to talk  18:01, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
Now I also notice there is a proposal to rename this to Monk seal. Should we assume that will take place and the article is about two genera? Graeme Bartlett (talk)
Yes   User:Dunkleosteus77 |push to talk  22:06, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
More checking: QPQ not required, only two nominations so far. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 20:39, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
Can I resurrect this one? Here are a couple of alt hooks:
New enough when nominated (expanded 5x on 1/16), long enough, neutral, has inline citations, copyvio unlikely (per Earwig; there was some close paraphrasing, which I've tweaked), hook format and length okay, hook is interesting, the two alt hooks are properly cited and supported (ALT1 has online source, ALT2 source is offline, AGF), hook is neutral, QPQ not needed, image is free and looks good. Rosekelleher (talk) 18:48, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

I prefer ALT2 rather than ALT1 because ALT1 only talks about the Hawaiian monk seal rather than monk seals as a whole.  User:Dunkleosteus77 |push to talk  23:13, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

Yup, good point. (Also, I'll just add that I Googled ALT2 and several other sources confirm it, so it's not a careless AGF.) Rosekelleher (talk) 15:04, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
