Prostitution among animals

  • Interesting topic. I remember hearing about a study that taught monkeys to use food items as money. What the researchers were surprised to observe is that some of the monkeys who learned the monetary value of the items were seen trading them for sexual favors. I found an NYT article] about it for you, which I would encourage you to add to the article. Otherwise, length, newness, etc comply with policies. Hook has been verified by provided inline citations: . Picture is compliant with policy and looks fine at small size. --ThaddeusB (talk) 18:00, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
You would increase your readership by saving this for April Fool's Day (1 April).  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 20:51, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
But the hook is not joke. --SupernovaExplosion Talk 00:57, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
To clarify, Wikipedia has a tradition of saving things that sounds high improbable, but are in fact completely true, for April Fools' Day. I can not imagine every promoting actually untrue items. --ThaddeusB (talk) 01:03, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Hmm, I must thank Kiefer.Wolfowitz for the suggestion. But what is the procedure to nominate this for April Fool's Day? Should I simply add it to Wikipedia:April_Fool's_Main_Page/Did_You_Know#Verified_hooks and remove it from Template talk:Did you know --SupernovaExplosion Talk 01:15, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Added to Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know. Should I remove it from Template:Did_you_know_nominations#Articles_created.2Fexpanded_on_February_18? --SupernovaExplosion Talk 02:15, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
  • Now that this is in the Fool's Day queue, perhaps a funnier hook is in order. I suggest:
ALT1 ... that Adélie prostitutes roam Antarctica in search of stones for sex?
--ThaddeusB (talk) 02:39, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Adelie Penguin

everything checks out, date, length, and facts for ALT3. I might suggest a little bit of a syntax fix with "... that Adélie prostitutes roam Antarctica trading sex with penguins (pictured) for stones?" but i understand that it does make the hook marginally less funny.--Found5dollar (talk) 17:35, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

  • Whatever you do, there should be a comma after "Antartica". LivitEh?/What? 20:09, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
  • "Trading sex with stones" would mean you're offering sex and receiving stones. "Trading stones with sex" would mean you're giving stones in return for sex. Use whichever portrays the article content correctly. And yeah, the comma. Wifione Message 11:07, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
  • ALT 5 (per Found5dollar's suggestion, and Livitup and Wifione's comments)

... that Adélie prostitutes roam Antarctica, trading sex with penguins (pictured) for stones? --SupernovaExplosion Talk 05:14, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

  • I'm concerned that some of this article's phrasing may be too close to that of its sources. For example, compare "It was also possible that the females were testing potential future mates in case their existing mates died before the next mating session" in the article with "the female penguins could also be testing potential future mates in case their existing partner died before the next mating period" in the source. Nikkimaria (talk) 19:48, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Even if fixed, it needs to be checked by an impartial reviewer; the tick here means that the article is formally approved. Have asked Nikkimaria to sign off. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:40, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
  • It could still be improved, but it's probably good enough now. Nikkimaria (talk) 18:02, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
  • The original hook was approved months ago by ThaddeusB. No reason for that approval to be questioned. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:20, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
