Interesting life, on good sources, no copyvio obvious. I could imagine - in hook and article - to first mention the accident, then the new instrument. Do we know the year of the accident (only for the article)? What do you think about using infobox person, which comes without the orange stripes? @Gerda Arendt: I've tweaked the hook as suggested; you're right, it's better. You know me; I'm not fussed over infobox formatting; if you tweak it, no objections, but I'm not keen on doing it. And we don't know the date, I'm afraid; I really had to scrape the sources on this one, and I've put in essentially everything that's not a detail of where he recorded which album with whom; it's on the borderline of what I'd even nominate for GA. Afraid not, much as I'd like to. There's some breaking news to deal with, a nasty conflict to monitor, and a film I've promised to help take to FAC, that I've been sorely neglecting...and plenty of work in RL, not to mention holiday season obligations. Vanamonde (Talk) 18:37, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
Vanamonde, I've just checked at the Grammy website, and according to them Nakai has had 11 albums nominated but none of them have won. It appears the Heartbeat source is wrong about the win in 2010; the winner for that year's Best New Age Album was Miho: Journey To The Mountain by the Paul Winter Consort (all 2010 winners are here). He appears to have been nominated in the Best New Age Album category eight times (including twice in 1999), Best Native American Album twice (in 2003 and 2007), and his first nomination, in 1993, was in the Best Traditional Folk Album category. I've struck the hook, but will propose a new one as soon as I've revised the Grammy material in the article. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:29, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
@BlueMoonset: Huh, interesting. I would not have expected a university publication to make that egregious an error. Why not just modify the hook in the same way: "...went on to be nominated for 11 Grammy Awards"? Vanamonde (Talk) 05:04, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Vanamonde, I've just finished the updates to the article, and had decided to go with the 11 Grammy noms for a proposed hook, which is 196 characters in a slightly tighter wording, and edit conflicted with you. (The original hook was 208 characters, which is why I snagged on it in the first place; I'd been looking to promote a bio, but needed to shorten the hook.) Gerda Arendt, can you please take a look at ALT1 and the changes I've made, to see whether they work? Many thanks.

  • Hi, I came by to promote ALT1, but footnote 5 does not verify the sentence Playing with the Armed Forces Band became impossible, after an auto accident damaged his mouth, making it impossible to produce the correct embouchure to continue playing brass instruments. Please also provide an inline cite for the first paragraph, second sentence, under "Musical career". A page number would be helpful. Yoninah (talk) 18:15, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
@Yoninah: I've duplicated the relevant citations for the hook, thanks for catching that. I don't see why that sentence in Musical Career needs a separate citation; it's verified by the footnote at the end of the following sentence. Vanamonde (Talk) 19:38, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

  • @Yoninah: again, good catch. I've dropped "cedar", because I checked, and none of the sources explicitly say he was given a cedar flute in 1972. One says he was gifted a traditional flute (which is made of cedar); another says he was gifted a cedar flute in 1975.   • @Vanamonde93: but where are you getting the year 1972? Footnote 6 only says that he received a cedar flute as a gift. BTW this is why I asked for a cite in the second sentence of the first paragraph under Musical career, since it's being used in the hook. Yoninah (talk) 21:14, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah: True. Now fixed, I believe; the new source says "In 1972 Nakai turned to the Native American flute after being given a traditional cedar wood flute as a gift." I should have cited that in the first place. Vanamonde (Talk) 22:11, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
