RISE project (oceanography)

Impressive article, on good sources, offline sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. - Hook question: For more prominence of the bolded article, it's a good idea to have that upfront in a hook. If you just want to raise interest, perhaps don't even mention the vents, just "black smokers". The (pictured) needs to go to what is pictured, and the caption is too long. It needs to fit under the small image. - The image is licensed and a good illustration. - Article questions: DYK requests at least an inline citation at the end of each paragraph, - some are still without. I could imagine shortening the "See also", perhaps to nothing. Thank you for the article, Bruce. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:35, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
  • ALT1 ... that 'black smokers' (pictured) were first discovered in 1979 on a mid-ocean ridge by the RISE project? Source: Figure 4A, page 1425 of F. N. Spiess et al., Hot Springs and geophysical experiments on the East Pacific Rise. Science, 207: 1421-1444, 1980.
I've shortened the caption, per the above comment, and offered a shorter ALT1 version for you guys to consider. Nick Moyes (talk) 22:46, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
I added citations to RISE article paragraphs. Thinking about how to revise hook. Thank you! BrucePL (talk) 23:37, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
suggested hook:
ALT2: ... that in 1979, the RISE project first discovered hydrothermal vents known as 'black smokers' (pictured), on a mid-ocean ridge in the Pacific Ocean? BrucePL (talk) 23:45, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for ALT1 and ALT2, and the citations. I got ALT1 down and dropped a comma, and gave ALT2 a name and added a comma. I like both better than the original, so strike that.
I wonder if the year helps to make it more attractive. If yes, why at the beginning? Can a project discover? (I'm not a native speaker of English.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:18, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
Nothing for approval or not, just a service to readers: could you summarise the scientific impact in the lead? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:24, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: Hi Gerda. I like ALT2 best. To answer your question, yes the project as a proper noun like a person's name, can discover. Stating the year tells readers this project is historic (40 years ago!). I added scientific impact to the lead - good suggestion. Are we 'Good to Go'? BrucePL (talk) 22:31, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. Striking ALT1 if you like ALT2 best. Thank you for the article, a great addition! - Now: keep this nomination on your watchlist, because then you'll see when it gets promoted to a preparation area, from there to a queue, and finally to the Main page. I'd advise to also take a look at Template:Did you know/Queue from time to time once it gets there, - sometimes hooks get changed and shifted without pinging. Good luck! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:26, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
