Samuel Gray Ward[edit]

  • The article doesn't mention Ralph Waldo Emerson being disappointed, or expressing any feelings about the marriage. Otherwise, everything checks out; AGF on offline source; image copyright is a little complicated, but it's old enough that it's easily in the public domain. Thanks for taking a look. Yes, photo is definitely public domain so no complications there. Not sure about your quibble about Emerson. It says, with a ref: Emerson was equally disappointed and wrote to fellow Transcendentalist Caroline Sturgis that the news affected him "with a certain terror" and concluded that "happiness is so vulgar". Is that not clear enough? --Rob at Houghton (talk) 13:25, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
  • Actually Fuller was disappointed also because Ward had become a merchant rather than a painter, as Fuller had long hoped for. She expressed these sentiments in a letter to Ward.
"when I learned you were to become a merchant, to sit at the dead wood of the desk,
and calculate figures, I was betrayed into unbelief.
"
Clearly, she was disappointed over his career choice foremost. Dowling, 2014, p. 139 articulates this rather well, claiming Fuller had an idealistic image of Ward, and would rather have seen him as the proverbial "starving artist", etc. - Gwillhickers (talk) 22:39, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
ALT1 ... that when Transcendentalist poet and banker Samuel Gray Ward (pictured) became a merchant rather than a painter it deeply disappointed his friends Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson? -- (171 characters)
Have expanded lede a bit and added some other context, w/ citations. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 16:43, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Hooks are interesting, however I recommend using ALT1 as supported by sources, per Emerson's sentiment. Hook and article length okay. Creation date okay. No dup links, no close paraphrasing. Image is PD. QPQ not required yet. Article is good to go. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 16:43, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
