Truss (unit)[edit]

Trusses loaded on hay-carts in Cumberland Market in 1915

  • ... that the legal weight of a truss (load pictured) depended on the time of year?

  • Comment: The article is currently at AFD, where it has been rescued from a large bundle, and so the DYK needs to wait upon the outcome.

  • Technically, it's just barely new enough and long enough, and it meets the basic content policies. The overly-long quotes are a bit of a sticking point, though. I don't mind some quotes, but when they take up 3/4 of the article, they should be shortened or summarized. --Jakob (talk) 13:49, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Please clarify your objection to the quotes as I used these quite consciously for a variety of reasons. Please note first that both texts are sufficiently old that they are public domain now. In the first case, I wanted to quote the statute accurately and convey its fussy, legalistic style. The whole statue goes on for pages in this vein and I trimmed the extract quite aggressively to focus on the key details of the exact weights. In the second case, I liked the clear style of the author and found him quoted elsewhere. As his text was created for the kindred spirits of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, it seemed appropriate to reuse it. A particular issue is that the text makes references to the figures which are used as images to explain the exact tools used for trussing. Trying to paraphrase the text while retaining links to the pictures seemed problematic.
To show willing, I might add more original text so that the quotes are not so predominant. I found more sources discussing the variation in trussing weights used in other regions but have been distracted by other topics. Andrew D. (talk) 14:05, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
WP:QUOTEFARM (point 2) and WP:LONGQUOTE (points 1 and 2) are relevant. Finally (and this is just my opinion), liking the style used in a source doesn't mean that it should replace encyclopedic writing. --Jakob (talk) 22:42, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
Nothing has been done to address these matters. --Jakob (talk) 20:43, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
