Umaswati[edit]

Umaswati
Umaswati
  • ... that Umaswati, an early 1st-millennium Indian scholar, wrote the oldest extant text in Sanskrit that summarizes Jainism philosophy completely?
  • Comment: The nominator is new to DYK, exempt from QPQ.

5x expanded by Nvvchar (talk), Capankajsmilyo (talk), Ms Sarah Welch (talk), and जैन (talk). Nominated by Capankajsmilyo (talk) at 14:51, 26 February 2016 (UTC).

  • @जैन:, @Capankajsmilyo: The DYK hook needs to match the content in the article, and be verifiable in the sources within the article. If the original hook was wrong, for some reason you know, we must withdraw this DYK nomination, and fix the article first. If you just prefer a different hook, we can add more hooks as,
ALT1: ... that Umaswati, an early 1st-millennium Indian scholar, wrote the first completely surviving Jain text in Sanskrit language?
However, this article should state ALT1 somewhere, with verifiable sources. Let us discuss this on the article's talk page. Feel free to add ALT2, etc. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 11:35, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
Updating, per consensus on the article's talk page. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 16:28, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

New enough, long enough. Hook short enough and sourced. No neutrality problems found, no copyright problems found. QPQ unnecessary and image properly licensed.--Launchballer 17:18, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but find that the lead seems to equivocate on whether this is the "oldest" (as the sources say) or "among the oldest". Yoninah (talk) 00:48, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah: Indeed. The equivocation may have been from how we phrased one of the sentences in the lead. Umaswati's text is the "first, oldest" in Sanskrit, but there are other ancient non-Sanskrit texts which may be older. It is difficult to date ancient Indic texts, on a relative basis, whether they be Jaina/Buddhist/Hindu, despite over 100+ years of scholarly studies and disputes. As the Indologist Max Muller wrote, "though we may guess much, we can prove nothing". I have reworded the lead of Umaswati, please see if that clarified or made it worse. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 02:28, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
  • @Ms Sarah Welch: yes, that works in the lead. Should the hook be reworded:
  • ALT2: ... that Umaswati, a 1st-millennium Indian scholar, wrote the earliest extant text in Sanskrit that completely summarizes Jainism philosophy? Yoninah (talk) 11:37, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
Seems good to me as well. -- Pankaj Jain Capankajsmilyo (talk · contribs · count) 11:58, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
Reviewer needed to approve ALT2. Yoninah (talk) 23:10, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
for ALT2. Launchballer has already checked the article for date, length, neutrality, copyright, image licenses and QPQ. The new hook is short enough and interesting. It is supported by references -- W. J. Johnson (1995) states that Tattvartha Sutra is the earliest extant Sanskrit text; K. V. Mardia (1990) states that "this work summarized concisely the whole of the Jain doctrinal system". utcursch | talk 21:43, 26 March 2016 (UTC)
