  • @जैन:, @Capankajsmilyo: The DYK hook needs to match the content in the article, and be verifiable in the sources within the article. If the original hook was wrong, for some reason you know, we must withdraw this DYK nomination, and fix the article first. If you just prefer a different hook, we can add more hooks as,
ALT1: ... that Umaswati, an early 1st-millennium Indian scholar, wrote the first completely surviving Jain text in Sanskrit language?

  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but find that the lead seems to equivocate on whether this is the "oldest" (as the sources say) or "among the oldest". Yoninah (talk) 00:48, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah: Indeed. The equivocation may have been from how we phrased one of the sentences in the lead. Umaswati's text is the "first, oldest" in Sanskrit, but there are other ancient non-Sanskrit texts which may be older. It is difficult to date ancient Indic texts, on a relative basis, whether they be Jaina/Buddhist/Hindu, despite over 100+ years of scholarly studies and disputes. As the Indologist Max Muller wrote, "though we may guess much, we can prove nothing". I have reworded the lead of Umaswati, please see if that clarified or made it worse. for ALT2. Launchballer has already checked the article for date, length, neutrality, copyright, image licenses and QPQ. The new hook is short enough and interesting. It is supported by references -- W. J. Johnson (1995) states that Tattvartha Sutra is the earliest extant Sanskrit text; K. V. Mardia (1990) states that "this work summarized concisely the whole of the Jain doctrinal system". utcursch | talk 21:43, 26 March 2016 (UTC)
