Van Gogh's 1889 self-portrait

  • No, the museuem doesn't, but the source that is present says it is the last one. - SchroCat (talk) 08:59, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
The problem is GA Vincent van Gogh also contradicts the hook. As per D10, "If your article contradicts an existing article, the contradiction should be resolved one way or the other before your article is approved."Redtigerxyz Talk 09:09, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
  • (edit conflict) Looking further, whoever wrote the Portraits of Vincent van Gogh article overstated the case, as it appears that there is some dispute among scholars on this point, and that "Self-portrait without beard" may have been painted some time before (they acknowledge this in the second point here: "Hulsker thought it painted in Arles following his admission to hospital", but ignore that to state definitely what isn't definite. I'll tweak the articles to reflect the uncertainty - I've added an alt to cover it. - SchroCat (talk) 09:16, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Tweaks made, and the uncertainty that exists in the sources is now reflected in the text. - SchroCat (talk) 09:31, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
(edit conflict)* Another issue: The article relies on dated 2006 and 2000 references for 43. Recent sources state that the number of paintings as 37. See Van Gogh article. In 2011, Self-Portrait with Straw Hat was reattributed as Portrait of Theo. Redtigerxyz Talk 09:33, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
I'll look into that, but as it is an unsupported statement I'm not sure how much weight to add to it; I've added a {{cn}} tag to it. - SchroCat (talk) 09:45, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
I've tweaked ALT1 to say "around 40", which is what the VG Museum say - I'll add to the article now - SchroCat (talk) 09:48, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
"with Hulsker considering that it was painted in Arles following Van Gogh's admission to hospital after mutilating his ear" was copied incorrectly from Portraits of Vincent van Gogh, which says the Hulsker regards " Self-portrait without beard" was painted in Artes and was not Van gogh's last self-portrait; not that this painting was the last painting. Can you please add a reference about Huskler supporting this painting is the last? I googled a little, and found that Self-portrait without beard generally is called "Van Gogh's Last Self-Portrait", which was noted also when it became one of expensive paintings of all time [1][2]. The theory that this painting is the last seems to be a WP:FRINGE; I don't think we should be promoting fringe theories on the main page. I can't pass the current hook. I suggest another reviewer look at this. Redtigerxyz Talk 06:53, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

No, it's from a reliable source (two, actually, and a third from library sources that I didn't include): that does not constitute a fringe theory - it's what academics do all the flaming time. DYK isn't worth the extra hassle, so perhaps someone could withdraw this. - SchroCat (talk) 07:59, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
