Vince Cardell[edit]

Created by 78.26 (talk). Self-nominated at 13:41, 8 June 2015 (UTC).

Article is new enough and long enough. Hook is correctly formatted. Article is well referenced and interesting. AGF on offline sources. Yahoo TV is not a reliable source I think so we need a new source for the claim that the Billy Leatherwood character was based on Cardell. The lead is too short and does not summarise the main points of the article. The personal relationship between Liberace and Cardell appears to be based on the word of Scott Thorson so I think the article could do with a good dose of "according to Scott Thorson"s, particularly the bit that says they were "almost certainly" lovers. I detected no copyvios or close paraphrasing. There is scope for an alt that he delivered diapers for a living which might be more quirky. I think the hooks should also work Liberace in somehow. Lots of sites say the Leatherwood character was based on Cardell, but very few of them reliable. I'm not up on which "modern" pop culture sites would be considered reliable, but the following two have authors that can be named in the citation, would either of these work? [1], [2]? Thanks! 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 02:40, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Vulture.com looks OK and confirms the stated fact. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:06, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
The source regarding Leatherwood has been added per above. The lead has been expanded, I think it may be a bit too long now, this isn't a very long article. Regarding the relationship with Liberace, much is indeed based on Thorson's say-so, but I only included it as Pyron makes the assertion himself based on other strong circumstantial/contextual evidence. I'm not fighting the point, but I would like further input before I write something stupid (which I am oh-so-capable of) in the article prose. Regarding the diaper delivery, my initial reaction was the same, i.e. "'He delivered diapers!' is uncommonly hooky", but the source doesn't say that. It says he drove a truck for a diaper company. For all we know, he delivered raw cotton from Georgia to the New Jersey manufacturing plant, if you only read page 215. Page 221 says he drove a "diaper truck" which makes it a bit more definitive, but it is still unknown whether he delivered packages in bulk to Walmarts across the country, or if he was making local door-to-door deliveries in the Bronx. I think I can make something "hooky" out of diapers in either case, but I'll wait until I hear commentary regarding the rest of the issues before I make the (so, so sorry...ahem) change. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 15:44, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
It's fine already. You can still add extra hooks, and there is plenty of scope for interesting ones. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:42, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
  • ALT1 ... that before Vince Cardell made a living as a pianist, he supported himself by driving a truck for a diaper service?
  • ALT2 ... that before pianist Vince Cardell was discovered by Liberace, he drove a truck for a diaper company?
  • ALT3 ... that Liberace's protégé Vince Cardell once drove a truck for a diaper company?
per suggestions of reviewer. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 13:55, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
Ticking all the hooks. They are all factually correct but Alt2 is the best in my opinion. Important to mention pianist and Liberace I think. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:19, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
