Comment: I've deliberately left out the fact that Harry Brown, the person who replaced him, was a professional footballer to increase the curiosity value. I wasn't trying to be deliberately misleading, let me know any thoughts you have on it.

Since it is not clear from the article that 1945 was during the war or after it, I am replacing "wartime" in the hook with the 1945 date. I am also taking SounderBruce's suggestion of "a footballer in the stands", and moving the subject further toward the front of the hook. Here is the tweaked hook that I'm promoting:
