  • As usual, a gem of an article. Recent GA, well written, comprehensive, and well referenced. DYKs are long enough and interesting, although I might suggest ALT2 ... that Ziyad ibn Abi Sufyan (dirhams pictured), the first governor of Iraq and the eastern Umayyad Caliphate, was considered among the four wisest Arab statesmen of his time? Accompanying image is relevant and suitably licensed. QPQ remains to be done, otherwise this looks great. Constantine 13:33, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
  • @Cplakidas:@BlueMoonset: Thanks for the kind words. Sorry this slipped under my radar. I'm fine with ALT2 and have now completed the QPQ. --Al Ameer (talk) 21:04, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
  • You can't approve your own hook. SL93 (talk) 15:43, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
  • Indeed, sorry and thanks. I forget sometimes how legalistically bureaucratic DYK has become. Constantine 11:17, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
  • New reviewer needed for ALT2. Yoninah (talk) 22:23, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
  • Article is a new GA, long enough, neutral, and well referenced. ALT2 is interesting and supported by offline source, accepted AGF. Image looks good and is freely licensed. QPQ is done. No copyvio issues (Earwig reports high confidence for copyvio because of the long blockquote). Good to go. -Zanhe (talk) 05:53, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote ALT2. Could you point out the sentence and cite that has him as the first governor of Iraq? I see the parts about being the first viceroy of the eastern caliphate and the one of the four wisest statesmen. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 23:50, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
As I understood it from reading the article, Iraq = Kufa + Basra, and Ziyad was the first person to be appointed governor of the combined entity. But I agree that this should probably be mentioned explicitly. -Zanhe (talk) 23:58, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
That is the correct reading Zanhe. He was indeed the first caliphal governor of a united Iraq (Kufa + Basra) and eastern half of the caliphate. I would also say viceroy and governor are interchangeable in this case and viceroy could replace “governor” in the hook if necessary. Otherwise, I’ll look into which source(s) have the exact phrasing. Al Ameer (talk) 00:11, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah:@Cwmhiraeth:@Zanhe: I was awaiting Yoninah's response to see if he'd accept my point or not that "first governor of Kufa and Basra" is in fact synonymous with "first governor of Iraq". Sorry if I didn't make this clear. In any case, I looked into the sources used in the article and they don't explicitly state that he was the "first governor of Iraq"; they note that Kufa and Basra, the two main garrisons and centers of Iraq and the entire eastern Caliphate in this early period of Islamic history, were combined for the first time under Ziyad's governorship. Therefore, he was indeed the first governor of a unified Iraqi province. His appointment set a precedent and after the interruption of the Second Islamic Civil War, Iraq was almost always combined into a single province under the Umayyads. If this doesn't pass muster with DYK rules, then just drop "first" from the hook and let's get this over with. --Al Ameer (talk) 14:44, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
  • Approving Yoninah's version of the original hook and promoting this, because it is in limbo, not having been returned to any nominations page. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:07, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
