Failure in Opera and IE[edit]

The first floating box.
Blah blah blah.
({{clearright}})
The second floating box.
Blah blah blah.

This doesn't work, at least not in Opera 7.54 or Internet Explorer (though it does in Firefox). To the right, I have a float:right div, then the current version of this template (plus some text inside to make it clear where it's being put), then another float:right div. This is rendered with the clearright div being placed under the first box (as it should be), but the second box is being placed to the left of the first since it's not itself clear:right. —Cryptic (talk) 00:15, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The second floating box and the clearright box appear on the same line for me as well, in Firefox 1.0.7. Stevage 17:25, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
That's how it's supposed to show up. In IE and Opera 7.x (but not 8.x), the first floating box and second floating box appear on the same line. —Cryptic (talk) 23:48, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Problem articles using this template[edit]

The Churchill College, Cambridge article uses this template, and the last few words of the third line of the "History" section are disappearing behind the first photograph (in my Internet Explorer 6 browser, anyway). Is this a bug in the clearright template, or is it being used incorrectly? Mike Field 08:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not working well.[edit]

{{Edit protected}} Could someone replace the <div> thingy on the template with <br style="clear:right;"/> that does work? It ruined Pichilemu#Education. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Diego Grez (talkcontribs)

The template was used incorrectly there. In this case clearing right was not enough. You wan to prevent the RIGHT column from running into the next LEFT column. In such cases you want to clear both right AND left and you should thus use {{clear}}. A break automatically also clears left, which explains why that did work for you, but this template is to only clear right. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:46, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
{{clearright}} simply doesn't work - Unlike the other two clear templates, it not only uses the CSS clear, but also uses CSS float. This means that the <div> it generates might clear other floated content (such as Wiki thumb'ed images) but it has no effect on normal text flow. it has done this since the template was created in 2005 - probably due to the almost universal lack of understanding of CSS float behaviour.
I cannot see any use for this behaviour and believe it should be changed to match the others. Even though this would obviously affect a bazillion pages, the current behaviour is too obscure (if not simply useless).
If we really need a template that clears floated image boxes without clearing flowed text, then we should have one, and it should be named distinctively so that users know what it's doing. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:27, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree the "float:right;" should be killed. Of all the pages I've tested, the behaviour is actually the same as not having {{clearright}} at all, and it is useless for it's intended purpose of clearing only right-floating elements. Edokter (talk) — 14:03, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK there's only 253 uses of this tempalte, I'm going to change this per consensus. If there's difficulties it can be changed back. Rich Farmbrough, 17:36, 1 March 2012 (UTC).[reply]

If there's some problems, try {{clear2}} instead. --Great Brightstar (talk) 17:15, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
