Formatting

Would it be appropriate to use {{hatnote}} here, to make its appearance consistent with other hatnotes (most obviously on mobile)? Hairy Dude (talk) 14:31, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

I don't see any advantage to that, and several disadvantages. This template is, as far as I know, used only at the top of the "members" sections of several hundred articles about Roman gentes—not necessarily that it's impossible to use elsewhere, but that's its original and primary function. The hatnote template, as it says prominently at the top, is meant to answer the question, "am I on the right page", which is not the function of this template. Readers who encounter it are on the right page; this merely directs them to another article for more information should a standard convention of Roman names be confusing—not likely to be the case too often, but providing this note is much more convenient than including a long discussion across hundreds of articles—particularly one that in some cases might be longer than the contents of the article. Hatnotes don't have a standard text; this does, and it does not need to be—and probably should not be—customized. Hatnotes don't come with custom links, which this template does. Is there something about mobile interfaces that makes this template confusing? Or is the only objection that it looks "inconsistent with [...] hatnotes"? Can you provide an example of how it looks "inconsistent", and why it would cause problems for mobile users? P Aculeius (talk) 16:48, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
