Fixed Template:WikiLove error[edit]

Ditched the {{WikiLove}} template altogether as it is coded strangely.

Or you could ask for help with understanding how that template works. It is coded in a relatively straightforward way compared to many templates. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:53, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jonesey95: Fine. But if you want my reasoning for being overly loud with the template, see Template talk:Always substitute. There’s no reason why documentation that is meant to explain how the template functions has to be so minimal. Sure, if you want people to just simply use the template, but what about people trying to learn how to make them? Is the documentation section of a template really such a horrible place to be empathizing the logistics of a template — even if loud? I think it beats the present approach. 4theloveofallthings (talk) 15:41, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The best way to learn how to make a template here is to find a template here that does something similar to what you want and that appears to be used (check the What links here link), then make a careful copy of it and adjust each part carefully until you get the result that you want. Creating your own style, with blinking words and mismatched syntax, and putting elements in non-standard places, will result in collaborators coming along to nudge your code in the right direction if you're lucky, and to nominate it for deletion if it looks like you have created something unusable or unsalvageable. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:50, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I’m going to be honest with you, given I assume 95 is your birth year, and it’s simply the greatest year to be born. Factual.
I HAD been trying that. Endlessly. That’s why I went ahead and made something so absolutely impossible to ignore and requested someone make the substitution template at the very least a little bit more noticeable. Perhaps linking at the very least to a Wikipedia:Substitution so that new editors can have direction to resources.
I was going to find out how to write it up no matter what, Jonesey95. I just want other editors to be able to as well. 4theloveofallthings (talk) 15:59, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is linked I am seeing, but to be honest with you the article isn’t helpful at all. Maybe I will just write an essay in the user namespace for new editors. Templates are very frustrating, Jonesey. Do you at least sympathize? 4theloveofallthings (talk) 16:02, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have skimmed through the last few month of your contributions, and I did not find any evidence of you asking for help. I may have missed it. We have WP:VPT and the WP:TEAHOUSE and the WP:HELPDESK and many other venues for editor assistance. Since you seem to be the only person having trouble with the subst template, which does link to Help:Substitution, maybe the problem is not one experienced by a large number of editors. I agree that templates can be confusing, and like any new and complex thing, they take time to learn. Asking for help can be a good way to learn. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:06, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Jonesey95 You are right. I apologize. 4theloveofallthings (talk) 16:39, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
