  • Please, make the Arabic pronunciation in between slashes //, because the pronunciation used in Wikipedia articles isn't the exact pronunciation for (Modern Standard) Arabic. Not only that, many people from different places pronounce slightly differently from each other when speaking (Modern Standard) Arabic. For example, Aljazeera /ald͡ʒaziːra/ may be pronounced correctly as [ælɡæˈziːræ], [ælʒæˈziːræ], [ald͡ʒaziːrɐ], [ælɡæˈziːɾæ], [ælʒæˈziːɾæ], & so on... The pronunciation is typed phonemically. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 23:27, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Except that we aren't consistent about that, and may transcribe sub-phonemic detail. This should be a topic for discussion, but generally we transcribe foreign languages phonetically, because English speakers cannot be expected to have a grasp of Arabic phonology, which would be required to interpret a phonemic transcription. Even if we use one phone for each phoneme and stick to Modern Standard Arabic, IMO we should still mark it as phonetic, to indicate that we are transcribing actual sounds and not mental abstractions. — kwami (talk) 00:44, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Variants, as in {{IPA-en}}

Is it possible that {{IPA-ar}} be updated, so that we could use it as {{IPA-en}} is used, to transcribe regional accents of literary Arabic? It is needed to be used to transcribe literary Arabic pronunciation related to, for example, Egypt with literary Arabic as pronounced in Egypt. By the way, I am not talking about Egyptian Arabic or any other variety of Arabic. Also, I want to make sure that if that update were made, it won't require {{IPA-arz}} to be removed, because Egyptian Arabic (or other varieties of Arabic) and literary Arabic are not the same language to be superficially labled Arabic when the cursor is paused on the IPA transcription. If such an update would require {{IPA-arz}} to be removed, then, please, don't make that update.

I imagine after the update, the template would be used as:

{{IPA-ar|mesˤɾ|EG}}Arabic EG: /mesˤɾ/

or

Arabic EG: [mesˤɾ]

Brackets to slashes

Please, change brackets to slashes as the current guideline for Arabic transcription suggests phonemic dialect neutral transcription. It would be even much better if we add some parameters which would allow us to transcribe allophonically between brackets or to specify a particular variety as described by a user above.--Lüboslóv Yęzýkin (talk) 14:08, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format. Primefac (talk) 16:30, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
I believe [{{{1}}}] to /{{{1}}}/. It would be good if we could also have implemented a switch which would still allow to use [] when needed.--Lüboslóv Yęzýkin (talk) 18:41, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
Please, also add this after pron=pronounced .--Lüboslóv Yęzýkin (talk) 19:22, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
