Pls make sure to add complete name of 10 guru sahiban with some respect by writing "ji" after their names. For example "guru nanak" is written but actually it is "Guru Nanak Dev ji" and same is done with other guru sahiban names. So it a humble request to read carefully about the rich history of "sikhism" which is a combination of sacrifice, warriors and honors. The principle of "sikhism" is to spread equality among people and destroy the social evils and all 10 Gurus have contributed for the same.

The complete names are - 1. Guru Nanak Dev ji 2. Guru Angad Dev ji 3. Guru Amar Das ji 4. Guru Ram Das ji 5. Guru Arjan Dev ji 6. Guru Har Govind ji 7. Guru Har Rai ji 8. Guru Harkrishan ji 9. Guru Teg Bahadur ji 10. Guru Gobind Singh ji 11. Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji. So Read these names and change accordingly.

This isn't a reply to anyone just an observation that much of the attributed claims in the name of Sikhism didn't prevail before it's establishment with the last Guru Gobind Singh Devji and till then it remains an offshoot of broadly Hindu philosophy. To claim that Guru Nanak Devji rejected the Vedas makes it explicable that every Ardass in the Holy Grant Sahib is cited in some context previously in the Vedas and more so in Bhagwad Geeta. Yes many aspects associated with Hinduism such as the caste system, Sati and other practices were rejected by Hindus themselves within the fold and is an acceptable facet of Hindu practice and its undoubtedly what Guru Nanak Devji and the nine gurus that followed him did preaching a reformed version of Hinduism till the tenth Guru gave it an identity not based on alternative Hindu philosophy but an approach to it. Also the rejection of the caste system claimed is only to the extent that discriminatory terminology such as untouchables etc is not attributed but it does exist to the extent of Sikh sects having their own Gurudwaras where outsiders are even more welcome than Sikhs of other sects and this difference sometimes extend to inter-marriage unacceptability too.
Hence much of the attributed material heredoesn't fit within a time reality. 5.68.220.171 (talk) 12:31, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Age of Guru Har Krishan ji[edit]

Sukh, the vast majority of readers of the English wikipedia describe one's age by the integer number of fully completed years. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe someone dying at the age of eight when that person at no point had lived through his eighth year.

Is it common in the Subcontinent or in Sikh society to describe one's age by rounding to the nearest integer?

--Adamrush 17:46, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, you do have a good point there :D I think the figure needs to be changed in other language wikis too. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 01:23, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look through the other ages, too. --Adamrush 14:01, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Discrepancies[edit]

In the main article for Guru Nanak, the date of birth is listed as 20 October, instead of 15 April.

For Guru Amar Das, the date of birth is listed as both 5 April and 5 May.

For Guru Gobind Singh, the date of death is listed as both 6 October and 7 October.

Are these conflicts between the Julian and Gregorian calendars? (Which could get really complicated) Or are they simply mistakes? --Adamrush 14:13, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A simple Google search, suggests Guru Nanak's date of birth is 20 October, Guru Amar Das's birthday has lots of hits for both dates and finally Guru Gobind Singh appears to have died on 7 October. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 00:56, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and the problems may be due to a mix between the Nanakshahi calendar (dates for Gurus at: [1] in Punjabi) and the Hindu calendar (see also Bikram Sambat). We probably need to mention both. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 01:07, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What the world needs is fewer calendars. Stardate -1138.90: We are investigating an anomaly in a western sector of Punjab... --Adamrush 06:37, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not verified template[edit]

I've add this template because we can't be sure of the birth/death dates yet. Also there is the problem of using more than one calendar for conversion, so this does need looking at and clarifying. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 18:18, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good source could be [2]. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 16:11, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also [3] and [4]. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 12:15, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Verified dates[edit]

I have verified the dates listed in the table. Primarily based on what the SGPC says [5] and secondarily based on All About Sikhs [6]. Most dates are from the SGPC site, however the ones I couldn't find are from the other site:

These are based on the old lunar Hindu calendar and *not* on the Nanakshahi calendar.

  • Guru Amar Das - Guruship (SGPC web site mentions March only, no day given) - Used AAS date instead.
  • Guru Arjan Dev - Guruship (SGPC web site mentions no date) - Used AAS date instead.
  • Guru Har Gobind - Guruship (SGPC web site mentions 1606 only) - Used AAS date instead.
  • Guru Har Rai - Date of Birth (SGPC web site mentions no date) - Used AAS date instead.
  • Guru Teg Bahadur - Guruship (SGPC web site mentions no date) - Used AAS date instead (same date as was here before).

I haven't double checked guru's parents names or ages but they should be okay. However, there are so many differing dates out there for the dates involving the gurus, I cannot be 100% sure these are correct. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 17:17, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the guruship date of Guru Nanak to the one on All About Sikhs [7] when he was believed to have received his calling from God (20 August 1507). Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 18:25, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Guru Nanak's Guruship[edit]

It is the firm belief of Sikhs that Guru Nanak was ordained Guru since birth . Mpsinghdelhi 14:20, 5 December 2006 (UTC)mpsinghdelhi[reply]

That's fine. But what then do you call his "enlightentment" when emerging from the Kali Bein? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:24, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template Expanded[edit]

I expanded the template on Gurus, I applied the criteria "what a new reader would like to see, that summarizes the life of all gurus" as a short-and-sweet tool of learning and remembering the details, but I also recognize someone who created the original template may not like (people tend to become emotionally attached and very guarded of any changes to their templates), as a result I might have to create another DETAILED template (the way I have it now) and use it on the pages of Guru jis, which someone might try to revert. What do you suggest? Take a look at this please: I added 3rd last column (Contribution and Death). Vdhillon (talk)

Some modifications for accuracy, some expansions[edit]

I am going to expand on the "contributions" (may rename that column, if I can think of something better than "contributions"). Also, I am going to make some modifications to existing text to make it more accurate. Information right now has been presented in an incomplete manner (pick and choose from the cited references), and also seems to depict the Sikh Gurus to be "Saviors of Hinduism" and "Opposite Islam" (e.g., for Guru Amar Das, the fact that he asked Akbar to remove tax (which was actually a "toll-tax", without any mention of Jizya) is mentioned, but the fact that he denounced Sati is not mentioned. It was also inappropriately claimed that he forbid Sikhs from visiting Muslim places, which is again an absolutely dishonest depiction, if you read the cited reference). Please do not portray things this way, as it belittles the universal message and preachings of the Gurus. Js82 (talk) 04:38, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Guru Harkrishan sahib g had lot more contributions 1) He banned killing of girl child 2) He banned use of tabaco and gave it name 'jagat jooth'. Hpjs (talk) 06:15, 12 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
