The link to the catalog's search engine doesn't work. I am going to remove it, because linking directly to it without going to the archive's homepage first does not work correctly. Rmsuperstar99 02:42, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Presumptuous[edit]
I don't know why the previous template, which simply established the source of the picture, as is the norm for USGov departmental photos, was replaced with this one, which requires that you know the ARC number. A picture taken from a secondary source that credits the photo to the NARA will not likely have the ARC number. The result is a template with exposed empty parameters. At very least there should be an option to obscure the "available with arc number" segment, or it should not be displayed if there is no id argument. - Keith D. Tyler ¶ 18:03, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
- By the "previous template" did you mean Template:PD-USGov-NARA? That one simply had a flat declaration that the image was from NARA and that many images in NARA are public domain, without actually specifying if the specific image it was applied to was really PD. Having the ARC identifier allows anyone to actually verify the licensing, so if you don't know the ARC number, you should probably look it up. All I'm asking for is some due diligence on the part of the uploader to make sure that the image is what you say (or your secondary source says) it is. IMHO, having the exposed empty parameter acts as an incentive to look up the number. howcheng {chat} 18:14, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
- I regret I have no idea how to determine the ARC number of an image. The NARA web site is a discouraging mess of buried metadata. If one government agency says it got is image from another government agency, then I use that indication to determine source, and that ought to satisfy sourcing. - Keith D. - That's not what I meant. I need to find the image in NARA first. There must be some secret to getting images to appear in the search results. So I'm still stuck with a problem where the image is attributed to NARA, but I can't fill in the ARC number because I don't know it, without trying to find it in the NARA search, because the results are just catalog entries, no images. - Keith D.
