Ewing Jr.

[edit]

There is an article I referenced saying that his likely number is 33.-DANO- (talk) 17:46, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Likely"... exactly............... JustSomeRandomGuy32 (talk) 18:17, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That is his projected number.-DANO- (talk) 21:21, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
By 1 Newsday beat writer. That's NOT a confirmed # (there is a reason why it is still blank on knicks.com). JustSomeRandomGuy32 (talk) 21:23, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bender

[edit]

Why is he still on the roster when he mostly likely won't be resigned by the Knicks? Fresh360Waves (Fresh360Waves) 18:22, 10 August 10 (UTC)

@Sabbatino:, if we go by what NBA.com lists, why is this template "LAST, FIRST" when NBA.com is "FIRST LAST"? Also pinging @Blahblah32blahblah:. Remember WP:BRD. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:19, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Muboshgu: The NBA.com uses "Last, First". Just try and type "Hardaway" in the search box in here, and you will see that the result will be "Hardaway Jr., Tim". Even his profile's link says "tim/hardaway_jr./203501", which means that "Hardaway Jr., Tim" is the correct usage per NBA website. And we go by what the source says regardless of what WP:JR states. P.s. I notified the NBA project about this. – Sabbatino (talk) 16:27, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The left side of http://www.nba.com/players/ uses "LAST, FIRST", but the right side uses "FIRST LAST". And the link in the template, http://www.nba.com/knicks/roster/, gives only "FIRST LAST". Why would an external site override the manual of style? – Muboshgu (talk) 16:32, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Muboshgu: Any why it should not? On other note, the jersey says "Hardaway" with no suffixes. The same situation goes to Larry Nance Jr. and he is listed simply as "Nance, Larry" at Template:Los Angeles Lakers roster and Template:Los Angeles Lakers current roster. In all fairness, I think we should omit the suffix from this template as Template:New York Knicks current roster shows just "Hardaway" (Larry Nance Jr. situation included) , which would be the best solution to this problem. Even Template:Atlanta Hawks roster used to show Hardaway's name without the suffix. – Sabbatino (talk) 16:56, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So the nba.com site is poorly designed to handle a name suffix and doesn't handle names in the English language correctly.... Wikipedia has a MOS for this. The Hawks previously didn't include the Jr so it was left out. The Knicks now do (again). Most importantly, "Jr" is not part of his last name (despite nba.com data fields including it for convenience in sorting). A name suffix always goes at the end of a name, whether it's written "first last suffix" or "last, first suffix" Blahblah32blahblah (talk) 17:55, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like the Pacers official roster and the Lakers official roster now include Nance and Robinson with their suffix... may need to update their roster templates as well.Blahblah32blahblah (talk) 18:02, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Wizards have 2... Blahblah32blahblah (talk) 18:04, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia's MOS is the set of governing rules for how to handle things on Wikipedia. We shouldn't repeat the mistakes made by external sites on Wikipedia. – Muboshgu (talk) 00:24, 22 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed that pro basketball seems to be the only (North American?) sport on Wikipedia that lists team rosters with players' last name first. Even college basketball lists the players as <firstname> <lastname>. Maybe we just change pro basketball to do the same?—Bagumba (talk) 16:33, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
