Link to article OMIM[edit]

I think there should be a link to the wikipedia article OMIM. I don't understand why it could be redundant. Many people never heard of it, especially the Average User. There are many other templates providing wikilinks explaining the resource, like these, so there is precedent.--Steven Fruitsmaak | Talk 11:13, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Originally, OMIM was linked to Mendelian Inheritance in Man. However, many articles have multiple OMIM links (subforms/isoforms etc), and it was felt that this would lead to overlinking. I support your reactivation of the link. JFW | T@lk 14:26, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If it helps, we have another template, Template:OMIM2, which can help reduce overlinking when multiple consecutive links are required. --Arcadian 16:58, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this would definitely help. I just want to avoid articles like this or ohteres that were even worse that are completely blue (it's bad enough that en.wikipedia links on every day and year that is mentioned). --Nina 07:23, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dox update[edit]

 • Old: "This template is good to use for the first OMIM citation in an article (or perhaps in a section), but is generally probably too long to use repeatedly; use the OMIM3 template instead for later citations. And OMIM2 can be used after OMIM to shorten a long list of OMIM citations."
 • New: "This template is good to use for the first OMIM citation in an article (or perhaps in a section), but is generally probably too long to use repeatedly; use the OMIM3 template instead for later citations. And OMIM2 can be used after OMIM to shorten a long list of OMIM citations. Either can also be used in infoboxes to keep the text shorter. In infoboxes, the plainlinks variants OMIM4 (variant of OMIM2) and OMIM5 (variant of OMIM3), without external link icons, can alternatively be used, where the context already makes it clear that the links are external." — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 03:34, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dox transclude[edit]

Documentation needs to be moved to an external file, so that dox updates do not require editprotecteds any longer. A standardized way of doing this is shown at Template:Resolved. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 03:34, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Abbreviation and article names[edit]

I propose a tweak to what the template displays, from "Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM)" to "Online 'Mendelian Inheritance in Man' (OMIM)"

 1. The display of "Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM)" begs the question, what does the "O" stand for - the "Online" should be given.
 2. The online version of the database is more up-to-date than the published version and we are linking to the online, not the hardcopy, version.

I've also added an optional second parameter allowing OMIM article names to be described where this might be useful:

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM): 604715 - is pretty meaningless compared to:
Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM): Orthostatic Intolerance - 604715

David Ruben Talk 02:23, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Third Parameter?[edit]

Leopard syndrome links to OMIM with an extra parameter that the template currently can't support - please consider an extra template argument to support this if useful. - Looking more closely this should be an OMIM2 variant.
See OMIM: ALLELIC VARIANTS or given the dddddd.dddd parent locus/ allele variant number could be handled in the parent locus first argument generally. An OMIM2 variant that allowed a description could replace the examples below

ie
176876.0005
176876.0006
...

From Leopard syndrome

There are 5 identified allelic variants responsible for LEOPARD syndrome.

rather than transversion.

The 2010 OMIM URL change may now make this unnecessary if ugly

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez/176876?db=omim&dopt=Detailed#176876Variants0004
is what's in the page
but http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/omim/176876#176876Variants0012 works
so 176876#176876Variants0012 should work.
ZZZZ - 176876#176876Variants0012 - no

Change in OMIM link[edit]

editprotect

The NCBI has simplified the format of their OMIM links for example from:

to:

The former link still works but now is a redirect that pauses several seconds before one is taken to the desired web page.

The new direct link has been included here:

and tested here:

 • "608042". Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man.

I would also appreciate if the corresponding changes are made to the OMIM2, OMIM3, OMIM4, and OMIM5 templates.

Protected edit request on 6 September 2014: Use protocol relative URL[edit]

Since omim.org website supports HTTPS, I suggest switching the link to protocol-relative URL (reason). Here is the change. Here is the testcase. Thanks! Chmarkine (talk) 23:13, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 2 June 2016[edit]

Please remove the single quotes from the rendered text, and...[edit]

Both the WP article and the site itself do not use quotes within the OMIM title. For example, the site says:

OMIM® and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man® are registered trademarks of the Johns Hopkins University.

So please change the rendered text:

Online 'Mendelian Inheritance in Man' (OMIM) {}

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) {}

PS. I just saw in Category: Medical citation templates that these templates also exist:

Template:OMIM2 Template:OMIM3 Template:OMIM4 Template:OMIM5 Template:OMIM6

Please create a See also section and put them there. I know some are mentioned in the doc, but it would still be better to emphasize their existence for the help-skimmers. Like me. :) — Geekdiva (talk) 07:04, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Just an observation, the text as stylized was added with Special:Diff/179312693. — Andy W. (talk) 07:53, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes/d'oh! I realized I could have just done that myself as I fell asleep but it was too late to do anything about it then. I'm glad I kept this page's tab open in my browser.
I had seen Special:Diff/179312693 when I was trying to understand why the quotes were there. I think the quotes were added when changing from "Mendelian Inheritance in Man" to "Online 'Mendelian Inheritance in Man'" to emphasize that the information had its origin in books that had only that part of the title. It's logical, but it's usually better to go for consistency with whatever the source styles itself. Thanks! — Geekdiva (talk) 16:48, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please use HTTPS for the OMIM database link[edit]

The purpose of this edit is to provide increased privacy and security for users by using an HTTPS URL for the link to the OMIM database. The omim.org site supports HTTPS. In this template, please change http://omim.org/entry/{} to https://omim.org/entry/{} instead. Thanks. --Elegie (talk) 09:28, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Add "www" in OMIM urls[edit]

OMIM has modified its DNS and now the website does not respond on bare domain. Please add "www." in the URL in the 1st line of the template, like this:

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) {{#if:{} |{} - }}{}<noinclude>

Thanks, — kashmīrī TALK 23:29, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Disregard. Must have been a temporary server or DNS failure at the OMIM end. I have modified other OMIMx templates by adding "www"; we can either keep them this way or revert. — kashmīrī TALK 23:36, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I would go with www. We know their server redirection can break, which means it probably will again.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  11:22, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Follow up from Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2020 July 20#Template:OMIM2[edit]

Following up from the merge discussion here, I'd like to propose a merge to one style using Cite web as the basis. See Template:OMIM/sandbox. This will allow a better consistent style and also use Cite web which will allow handling of errors or any other feature available to that template. --Gonnym (talk) 10:30, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Since some of the OMIM templates are used in infoboxes, the usage of cite (and the longform format) may not be appropriate. eg the table at Down syndrome research would look like this, which isn't really desirable. At a glance, I feel like that TfD should've been for two templates: one for citations (like this currently does), and then one single other template for non-template usages to be split into prefixing OMIM and not. Both those functionalities shouldn't logically be in the same template. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 14:03, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
