Usefulness of this template[edit]

I don't think this template is useful – similar templates are meant to highlight current issues and suggest to editors what can they fix. If I read an article and see such template, I might decide to fix it. But this template is only meant for editors, there is no need to show it to readers. It can be substituted either with <!-- a comment --> or with an edit notice (or both). Svick (talk) 20:24, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You have a point, though I think of this more as the inverse of the {{Expand}} template, which is generally used in article space. However, perhaps this template can be converted into a Edit notice template since no standard template of this type seems to exist and there are many edit notices that more or less parallel what is said in this template without necessarily pointing to the appropriate policy guidelines: [1] [2] [3] [4].
Yet, if we decide to convert it into a edit notice template, I think an additional small note in the article space before the edit notice would be nice, perhaps something like:
Such a note would spare those who tend to write the bulk of their material with an external editor before finally clicking on the edit button only to see the edit notice after the work's been done. What do you think? —CodeHydro 13:21, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that smaller note is better, but I still think it would be even better without it. I think that editors who use external editors are mostly experienced and so they should know the policies (at least in the areas they edit) and so even the smaller variant shouldn't be necessary. I was thinking more of the new editors who might write something in MS Notepad or MS Word first because they don't trust the Wikipedia editing box. Those who haven't worked on Wikipedia much are very easily discouraged from editing more frequently when they see their initial efforts wasted. —CodeHydro 18:15, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template is TOO complex[edit]

Please simplify this template, or it will be proposed for deletion as unmaintainable within seven days. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:42, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@ShakespeareFan00: I pruned the sandbox version a bit. There is no need to show the "what to do if this isn't an editnotice" if is is an editnotice, and there is no reason to have a third appearance when the template is viewed directly. --Ahecht (TALK

Thanks... Can you test case the new version before swapping it in? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 18:10, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ahecht: - Template:Editnotices/Page Doesn't necessarily seem to exist. Unless this IS an Alias? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 18:21, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@ShakespeareFan00: If there is an editnotice for a page, it will be located at Template:Editnotices/Page/Example. The root Template:Editnotices/Page doesn't exist. This template, I think, is trying to detect whether or not it is placed inside an editnotice, but as far as I can tell, that detection doesn't work. I'm frankly tempted to just remove all the conditional statements and have it always display the "this should be an editnotice" message. --Ahecht (TALK

The Editnotice detection should be in it's own template or Module. so that the logic is simpler ... ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:11, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
