This page is a direct descendent of Template:R from brand name. The history of that page is recapitulated below to satisfy provenance of authorship.

Definition of predecessor

[edit]

Does this Rcat apply only to companies which have merged or split, or can it be used for companies which have simply renamed themselves without such reorganization? (I have so far used R from former name for the latter.)

That is, are the predecessor and current company names required to represent legally separate companies? I looked at wikt:predecessor, but it doesn't provide clear guidance on this question. --SoledadKabocha (talk) 07:00, 18 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

To editor SoledadKabocha: My interpretation is the same as yours has been. If it's just a rename, then I use R from former name. I reserve this rcat for predecessor names that changed as the result of a merger of some sort.  OUR Wikipedia (not "mine")! Paine  08:27, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Generalize template to predecessor organizations

[edit]

There are many other types of organizations which merge to produce new organizations. One example I frequently encounter is unions, such as Graphic Communications International Union or potential redirects covering the many merged locals of SEIU 32BJ.

Several relevant results are found in the intersection of Category:Redirects from former names and Category:Redirects with possibilities. Note an external tool is required due to CirrusSearch not indexing redirect pages.

Some of these results don't even quite fit the description of "organization", for example Waveney Valley Railway or Chevy Trucks NASCAR 150. If it seems worthwhile to fully generalize, perhaps "redirects from predecessor name" would fit the bill with an explanation of what separates it from "former name". djr13 (talk) 17:25, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Admittedly the "with possibilities" of the non-organization articles returned by the intersection are pretty dubious, and most look like simple renames. djr13 (talk) 17:34, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
