Error[edit]

What is the succession box error at Joe Garaglioa ? - Kittybrewster 08:40, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed, it was a start box and a end box too much. Greetings ~~ Phoe talk 10:34, 26 November 2006 (UTC) ~~ [reply]

New box[edit]

I think we need a form for disputed reigns - where two rulers claim a kingdom, each ruling over part of it. I'll have a crack at this myself. Slac speak up! 21:01, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can somebody help me to fix this template? I'm not sure what's wrong. Slac speak up! 21:02, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed with a, erm, delay. In any case, this is not the place to post such demands. I would suggest the main project talk page instead.
There were several mistakes in that box, by the way. I would draw your attention to the incorrect spelling of "rows" (it read "row") which prevented the predecessor and successor boxes from covering three rows, the unnecessary repetition of the last box (each element should only be mentioned once) and the wrong misplacement of the |- character. Don't be discouraged though; learn from your mistakes and keep contributing! Waltham 19:33, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Possible problem with s-ref[edit]

I cannont get s-ref to work satisfactorily in the Ian Macfadyen article. I have tried:

 • and
 •

Neither seems to display any text. Any suggestions? Greenshed 21:19, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is odd. It works fine until you add an external link. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 13:20, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
BTW- this is the discussion for the DOC page. You might want to post this on the main Template talk:S-start. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 13:41, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Example formatting[edit]

Some style issues with the examples:

Preceded by
Martin
King of Europe
14921528
Succeeded by
Robert
 • Lone years should not normally be linked.
 • The examples use an emdash between the dates; this should be an endash. See WP:DASH#Dashes. If the connected dates do not contain a space, there there is no space between the dates and the endash; if there is a space in the dates, then there are spaces separating the endash from the dates.
Examples:
1969–1975
16 May, 196921 August, 1969
 • Years should be in full; instead of 1620 — 41, it should be 1620–1641.

Prompt response: WikiProject Succession Box Standardization's guidelines now provide detailed instructions on the correct style of the dates. A couple of changes have been made on the format accepted by the Manual of Style, however: dates are not linked even if they are complete, and blanks are added between the lone years and their connecting dash. Problem with s-vac[edit]

The following succession box is on William Bruce (architect):

s-start
sct-bt
s-new

|-
s-off

end

Which currently looks like this:

Baronetage of Nova Scotia
New title Baronet
(of Balcaskie)
1668–1710
Succeeded by
Political offices
Preceded by
James Murray Jr.
Surveyor General of the King's Works in Scotland
1671–1678
Succeeded by

I want to change it to this, noting that the office of Surveyor was vacant both before and after Bruce:

s-start
sct-bt
s-new

|-
s-off

end

But it comes out like this:

Baronetage of Nova Scotia
New title Baronet
(of Balcaskie)
1668–1710
Succeeded by
Political offices Vacant
Title last held by
James Murray Jr.
Surveyor General of the King's Works in Scotland
1671–1678
Vacant
Title next held by
Archibald Murray of Blackbarony

The only thing I am changing is s-bef and s-aft to s-vac. Please help! Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 17:28, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like a bug in s-vac. Looking at the code, it starts with a | which means the preceding code for s-off is the first column in a table row. You can work around this by adding a |- between s-off and s-vac. I recommend you add a comment so future editors know why it is there. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 18:02, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
s-start
s-off
|-<!---This line is a workaround for a bug in template s-vac--->

end
Political offices
Vacant
Title last held by
James Murray Jr.
Surveyor General of the King's Works in Scotland
1671–1678
Vacant
Title next held by
Archibald Murray of Blackbarony
That works perfectly! Many thanks Gadget, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 10:41, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Documenting S-start's only parameter[edit]

Should the documentation not also mention the template's S-start only parameter, noclear? Michael Bednarek (talk) 23:34, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Microformats[edit]

A number of date-containing templates, such as Start date, emit microformats. A limitation of such templates is they must not be used for dates in the Julian calendar. Does this family of templates emit microformats? Jc3s5h (talk) 17:23, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

update required to Charles, Prince of Wales[edit]

The example in Template:S-start/doc#S-vac needs to be updated to reflect the fact that Charles, Prince of Wales is no longer the incumbent Prince of Wales (and William, Prince of Wales is no longer the heir but now the incumbent). Set theorist (talk) 14:23, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
