Idiots

[edit]

Who were the idiots who came up with the name of this template? Why would a template giving a "single apostrophe followed by a space" be called "single space"? This mind boggles at that stupidity. EEng 03:54, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

IT WAS YOU, SANDY SMcCandlish! WHAT IN THE WORLD CAME OVER YOU??? EEng 03:55, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'll have to get back to you on that. It seems daft to me now, too.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  03:59, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@EEng: Looks like some bad idea from back-when. The original templates in the series were named "single double", etc., as a shorthand for "single quote plus double quote", so "single quote plus space" was compressed to "single space", without any consideration of whether this would make much sense on its own or whether we'd someday need a template for, literally, a single space. I'm of a mind to just move them all to some other naming scheme, since no one sane uses these spelled-out names for them, but only in short form ({{"'}}, etc.). Some non-punctuation names for them can still be short. Maybe "dqsq" for "double quote plus single quote", "sqdq" for vice versa, "dqs" for "double quote plus space", etc.?  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  04:03, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
