Proposal: Create a piped link to Taiwan for the below reasons.

When this template is used, it is used to represent instances where Taiwan uses the Chinese Taipei moniker, not to describe the moniker itself. For example, in Olympic athlete articles, Representing Chinese Taipei means representing Taiwan, whose Olympic Committee competes under the CT name. It does not mean representing the term used. For the same reason that United States would not link to Names of the United States, this template should link to Taiwan instead.  Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{Edit template-protected}} template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:52, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose So this template should be used with the name Chinese Taipei, but should then be linked to Taiwan. This sounds more political in nature than providing information to the reader. It is precisely by linking to Chinese Taipei that the reader learns about the political circumstances of this name. If you want to address Taiwan directly as a country, you can do it directly using the template
{{TWN}} ->  Taiwan. It makes no sense to do it also if somebody wants to use {{TPE}} for the term  Chinese Taipei in particular.

Discussion and survey

[edit]

In an effort to establish a consensus, I would like to start a straw poll and welcome everyone’s opinion, comment, or questions. For the avoidance of doubt, the proposal here is to add a piped link to Taiwan in this template, [[Taiwan|Chinese Taipei]]. The rationale is that the team name represents the country, and similar to other countries' templates which link to the country articles, this one should also link to the main Taiwan article.

Feel free to state your position on the proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account any relevant Wikipedia conventions or guidelines, as well as the 2020 RfC.
