Explaination and Examples

While this template is automatically added to a new to do list thhere is nothing here that explains how to use it or gives examples of template with some data in it in use. All the examples of to do lists I have looked at do not use this template. Please exaplain it's use and why it is included in to do list template. - Waza 21:57, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

I think it gets used in Template:Todo at least. --Jvv62 16:10, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Image parameter

I've added a #switch parameter, image=off, which allows you to remove the image from the left side of the template. This seems preferable for times when the template is used in a small formfactor, such as with {{todo|small=yes}}. Otherwise, the image takes up considerable real estate. Template will work with or without "image" specified, or even with "image=on" given. My testing reveals no problems, but if any are discovered, do please fix or revert. It won't hurt my feelings :) -- Huntster T@C 01:49, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Add a "Split" category as well

Suggest a split section be added as well, as merges can be discussed on a talk page/task list, so can splits.

This seems reasonable. Would an admin please insert the following after the merge lines?
-->{{#if:{{{split<includeonly>|</includeonly>}}}|<li>'''[[Wikipedia:SPLIT|Split]]:'''
{{{split}}}</li>}}<!--

Further explanation needed

The list of parameters seems complete, but further explanation is needed. For example, should "Cleanup" contain the name of a Category, a comma-separated list of articles, or point to a page which has a list of articles which need to be cleaned up? -- SEWilco (talk) 18:51, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Please replace a PNG with an SVG

Request

{{editprotect}}

Can some please make the tasks link optional so that it can display links to other lists or turn the link off completely? --Jeremy (blah blah) 01:41, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Do you have some specific code you want? I'm not sure exactly what you mean.- Trevor MacInnis (Contribs) 05:09, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

One of the editors on the Beer Project has asked that the link that goes to the open task page be disabled so that it does not take a reader to another page unrelated to the project. --Jeremy (blah blah) 10:16, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

In order for us to make the edit you want, we need some specific code you want put in. Telling us what you want done isn't enough, as if we don't do it the way you want we just have to come by again. We also need to make sure that the changes you're proposing won't heavily affect other wikiprojects, since this is a widely used template. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:27, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Image parameter broken

If I try to turn the image off, I just get "File:Off" at the top of the template, and the image remains. Anyone know how to fix this? GreenReaper (talk) 21:38, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Additional parameters

Can we add parameters for "coordinates" and "images" (see examples at Wikipedia:WikiProject West Midlands/to do)? If teh "how to" for coordinates could be hard-coded, so much the better. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 10:37, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Request to update template

{{edit protected}} There is a version in the sandbox [1] where all the piped links have been updated to their current page names, formatting has been fixed, and the list has been organized with "Requests" at the top, and with the rest alphabetized. The sandbox version has been tested [2], and there doesn't seem to be any bugs. Could you add the new version to the template? It would look a lot better. Thanks --Funandtrvl (talk) 23:39, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Request to update template #2

{{edit protected}} I would like to update this generic template by adding several more parameters, similar to what's included in {{bizetasks}}. The updated sandbox version is here: [3] Thanks, --Funandtrvl (talk) 19:07, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

There was no opposition to this proposal so I have made it so. I think {{{image}}} might be a better name for the parameter than {{{photo}}} though. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:15, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
The compelling reason at the moment to not use the parameter "image" is because there is already a parameter named "image" that is used for turning the nuvola icon on or off. If there is a way to rename that on/off parameter to something else and be able to tell which links are using that parameter, so that they can be migrated to some other word, then maybe we can re-assign the "image" parameter to mean "photo needed" or "picture needed" instead. --Funandtrvl (talk) 15:25, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Or you could use {{{media}}}. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:47, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, how about {{{graphics}}}? Because that would match the Graphics Lab, and because "media" seems like it relates more to newspapers and tv. --Funandtrvl (talk) 23:53, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Yet another request

{{edit protected}} Can someone remove the link to Requests for expansion? That should've been axed nearly two years ago when that project was tagged as historical. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Many ottersOne batOne hammer) 03:14, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

It's already been done, in 2008 [4]. I'd say purge your browser, but surely it can't be that old :-)  —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 06:55, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

The link for the word "Assess" in this template currently links to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Guide/WikiProject#Assessment, but a better destination would be the guideline Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment. Thanks! Mlm42 (talk) 19:15, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Two columns?

I was just wondering if it were possible to add a function for the list to break into two columns, as I think it could save a lot of wasted space when it's mostly small tasks that are listed. Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask. ReecyBoy42 (talk) 15:52, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes it is the right place to ask, but it might be better to put this in a new section as it deals with a different issue. Perhaps you would like to experiment in Template:Tasks/sandbox or perhaps Kumioko could help you with this. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:26, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Adding a "date of last update" line

Many to-do lists are pretty outdated. I think it'd be helpful to add an automatically-updating "date of last update" line to this template, which would take the form of something like <small>(Last updated {{REVISIONDAY}} {{REVISIONMONTHNAME}} {{REVISIONYEAR}})</small>. Does that sound good? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 19:26, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Delinking "tasks awaiting attention"

"Tasks awaiting attention" currently links to WP:Community portal/Opentask, a list of Wikipedia-wide tasks. That's not really a useful link for a template that goes on specific talk pages with specific tasks for that article. I propose removing the link, a small part of addressing WP's overlinking problem. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:33, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

Implemented. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 17:05, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

Need explanation of parameters

The article has a list of parameters, but has absolutely no explanation of their semantics. One could guess based on the common English meanings of the keywords, but absent context it is guarantied that different editors will make different guesses. --Shmuel (Seymour J.)
