Minus sign[edit]

This template generates a time specification in the form UTC-04:30 (with a hyphen) instead of the Wikipedia standard UTC−04:30 (using a minus sign). Can it be changed? Colonies Chris (talk) 17:56, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Colonies Chris: Technically, the template doesn't know anything about hyphens or minus signs. It simply uses the input from the template call completely unprocessed. After typing up a long explanation of various ways your concerns could be addressed in this template, I came across {{time}} which seems to be a complete replacement for this template (in particular, see Template:Time/doc#UTC offset). Accordingly, I will soon be replacing all calls to this template with calls to the other and nominating this template for deletion. - dcljr (talk) 08:31, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for the explanation. Colonies Chris (talk) 13:29, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, when I went to replace calls to this template by calls to {{time}}, I realized there is a significant difference between the outputs of the two templates in how they handle the time offset information, as noted in my comment at Template talk:Time#True ISO 8601 and no article link. I'm going to wait to see what the response is to that request before moving to deprecate this template. - dcljr (talk) 04:42, 30 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
