Purpose[edit]

"…so that is can be protected from editing…on the Main Page." This to me sounds like it was uploaded to be protected; perhaps something like "…has been uploaded from the Wikimedia Commons to be used on the Main Page, and as such has been protected" would sound better? —$ΡЯΙNGεrαgђ (-¢|ε|Ŀ|T|♪-) 19:43, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The only reason that it is temporarily uploaded from Commons is solely to be protected here on en.Wikipedia. If the policy of main page images were such that they were not protected whatsoever, there would be no reason to upload a temporary copy, and just follow the directions at Wikipedia:Commons#Introduction by referred to the commons images as if they existed here, e.g. [[Image:TitianStJohn.jpg]]. This template is confusing. It is not necessary to actually upload a local copy. The same effect can be achieved by creating and protecting an orphaned description page (i.e. one with no corresponding image, the commons copy will still display). That would likely be more server-friendly method as well, particularly for high-resolution images or those used on numberous pages (flags, for example). —freak(talk) 08:59, Jan. 25, 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately, it is still necessary to upload a local copy. A blank page on Wikipedia just leaves the Commons copy vulnerable to vandalism. And few Wikipedia admins have the power to protect Commons images.--Pharos 09:07, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it has been discussed occasional throughout the years. And some do in fact make requests there from time to time. But there are two things that are beneficial about temporarily uploading from Commons: The first is speed. It is much faster for an admin here on Wikipedia to immediately upload a local copy here then wait for a Commons admin. The second reason has to do with politics. You have to remember that Commons is a image and media repository used by all Wikimedia projects. So those who are more active on some of those other sites are reluctant to protect because they would prefer that the images not be protected directly on Commons so they and those other users can freely edit those files regardless of what is happening here on en.Wikipedia. Use "File" instead of "Image"[edit]

Please do not use Template:pp-meta[edit]

Please do not use {{Pp-meta}} here. That meta template is currently coded so that it becomes invisible on the trancluded page when protection has expired. Here, the Uploaded from Commons template must be visible even when protection has expired so that it notifies others that the temporary file needs to be deleted. Thanks.
