Ordering[edit]

@Obi2canibe: I have reverted your edits as this template and the years of Sri Lanka follow the larger historical periods of the island and not individual polities. The name and the space of the polities may change over time, but they are all in relation to the whole island overall. For example, the Dominion of Ceylon is a small epoch during the larger Contemporary period since independence, the polity is essentially the same.--Blackknight12 (talk) 08:42, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Blackknight12: Sri Lanka was officially and, most importantly for Wikipedia, commonly known as Ceylon prior to 1972. As a result Wikipedia articles/categories relating to Sri Lanka prior to 1972 use "Ceylon", not "Sri Lanka", in their names. Of particular relevance here is the naming of categories for years prior to 1972 - they use "Ceylon", not "Sri Lanka". There have been two discussions at WP:CFD (June 2015 and July 2015) where it was agreed that categories would use "Ceylon" for the period 1815 to 1972. It is therefore incongruous for us to use "Sri Lanka" in articles for years prior to 1972.
I appreciate your comment that names change and if the articles under discussion covered a large period then it would be right to use "Sri Lanka" as has been used, for example, on History of Sri Lanka or List of prime ministers of Sri Lanka. But as the articles under discussion only cover a single year we should use the "widely accepted historical English name" (Ceylon) as required by WP:PLACE.--Obi2canibe (talk) 15:39, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have sought comments from WP:SRI LANKA and WP:YEARS to broaden the discussion.--Obi2canibe (talk) 15:50, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with Obi2canibe that for those years prior to independence (1815-1972) it should use "Ceylon" and for those years post independence "Sri Lanka", as this was the "widely accepted historical English name".Dan arndt (talk) 01:04, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To both, I see your point but I still dont fully agree with how to resolve it. however, seeing as there is still much work to be done, in the articles in this template and the wider history of Sri Lanka scope here on Wiki, I will revert the titles of the articles from 1816 to 1971 to "Ceylon" for now. 1815 being a transitional year from Kandy to British Ceylon, details can be further elaborated in the article.--Blackknight12 (talk) 02:38, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
