Different contact types

Following this discussion it looks like user:Train2104 tried to add options for different contact types. Unfortunately {{{1}}} already has a use, so can't be overloaded here. There are two ways to go here: freeform (as Train2104's implementation was) or hardcoded (so you could add |type=tweet to get a personal line about Twitter. I think that's the better approach and I'l do the code myself if we get an agreement on what exactly we should be supporting. Wikipedia is not the right place to exchange private letters with other users. If someone wants to inform a user (through Wikipedia) that he/she has a personal email or a tweet (or anything outside wikipedia), this is not the place to announce it.

Of course there is an option to send private mails to users but this is intended for cases that a user does not seem to "come" in here often. When user "comes" here there is no need to be informed that something is waiting to his e-mail. (either private or a spam or anything, and only in case user has checked the option to receive private mails).

The only reason I find, that such an announchment must be done here, is that someone maybe prefers to use Wikipedia as IM, which IMHO is not ethical. Wikifriendly --Xoristzatziki (talk) 05:55, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My impression was that this is primarily for e-mails related to Wikimedia projects and not so much "hey check out the cool cat pics i sent you". It's useful if you want an admin to check their email or something like that. Best Regards InsaneHacker (talk) 17:06, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
People are busy, and may not log-in unless they have reason to do so, but they can still view their talk pages without logging-in. Sometimes the notification system is broken, which is rare but not unheard of. This template can let admins know on their talk page that they have a private message waiting, without revealing the nature of the message, especially if it is of a sensitive nature that requires a timely response. {{You've got mail}} is an important tool. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 07:37, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

RfC: Proposal that the template contain an auto signature, time reference, automatic note placed in edit summary or similar

Can the "You've got mail" / "YGM" templates contain an auto signature, time reference, automatic note placed in edit summary or similar?

The standard request move template is written as:

{{subst:Requested move|NewName|reason=Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. Surely the "You've got mail" template should do similar? In agreement with comment above, I don't personally think that Wikipedia should have a mail facility which seems to me to be a bit like notes being passed under the table. It contravenes concepts of transparency particularly in the context that Wikipedia otherwise has guidelines on such topics as WP:CANVAS. At the very least I think that notifications such as "You've got mail" should give who, when and (in the context of edit summary) what type references. GregKaye 08:23, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see any problem in principle with adding auto-signatures. We would have to update Twinkle if we did this, though, as it automatically inserts a signature below the template, meaning Twinkle would accidentally add two signatures otherwise. I don't think it's technically possible to add a message to an edit summary from a template, although this could potentially be done via Twinkle. I'm not sure that adding auto-signing and custom edit summaries would necessarily improve transparency, though - users could easily just send an email without using the template, and I don't think that we can force users to always use a custom edit summary. Is that first entry in the Usage table vandalism? It's got two seemingly unrelated redlinked templates and it doesn't give any example like the other methods. -- Gestrid (talk) 21:24, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Twitter Option

Should the Twitter version of the template really be followed by the normal blurb about checking your email inbox? It really should say something about checking your Twitter notifications. The dashlesssig switch looks like this: |yes= ~~<noinclude />~~ which seems to assume that a space would be inserted before the dash in the user's existing signature. This is not the case; I just used this template, and I discovered that I have to add &#32; into the parameter when deploying {{You've got mail|dashlesssig=~~~~}}, between the equal sign and the first tilde. I recommend replacing the space in the code with &#32;.

I also noticed that the documentation makes no mention of headings, only that this template does not require substitution. After viewing the source, I couldn't be certain whether this template is supposed automatically generate a heading. Viewing the page history of a user's talk page where this template was previously deployed, provided no clues. The documentation isn't protected, but I would still like to suggest clarifying whether users should add a heading or not when deploying the template. Perhaps when the template is substituted, a heading is generated, but not if it isn't substituted. For comparison, {{subst:Rfd notice}} will automatically generate a heading when substituted, which is stated very clearly in its documentation. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 06:45, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
