Tenille Clarke is a Trinidadian publicist, writer, and cultural enthusiast.[1] She is known for her contributions to promoting Caribbean culture, particularly Trinidad Carnival, through her writing and public relations work.[2]

She helped publicize the careers of celebrities such as Brian Mac Farlane,Hector Roots Lewis and Olympian Cleopatra Borel.[3]

She has contributed as a journalist for Forbes, British Vogue, ELLE US, Teen Vogue, Essence, Madame Noire and Andscape for ESPN.[4]

Early life and education[edit]

She was born and raised in East Dry River, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, growing up in one of the poorest communities in Trinidad, she started connecting to the traditions of Trinidad Carnival.[5]

Clarke pursued her education locally before furthering her studies in The Humanities, with a specialization in Social Sciences, with a background in public relations and media management.

Career[edit]

Clarke has organized cultural events in Trinidad and Tobago, such as The Carnival Oasis, collaborating with US-based alcohol brand Ten to One Rum.[6]

She has represented celebrities in the music, fashion, and entertainment industries, including Aaron "Voice" St. Louis, Roy Cape , Brian Mac Farlane,former English Premier league player Kenwyne Jones[7] and Olympian Cleopatra Borel.[8]

As a Journalist and writer, she has contributed to British Vogue, Elle, and Essence, covering topics ranging from Carnival culture to body positivity, one of the pieces for Elle explored the intersection of body image and Carnival, shedding light on the complexities of beauty standards within Caribbean festival space.[9]

Activism[edit]

She gained attention for her involvement in seeking justice for Josiah "Jonty" Robinson, an openly gay Grenadian singer-songwriter, model, and actor whose body was found on BBC Beach in St George's, Grenada. Clarke wrote a tribute for British Vogue, and after that Robinson's friend, Yvette Noel-Schure, and filmmaker Tyler Perry offered a reward for information related to Robinson's murder, which was determined by a second autopsy.[10]

Clarke has used her platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in the Caribbean region.[11] She has spoken out against violence targeting the LGBTQ+ community and has emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces and fostering acceptance and inclusivity.[12]

She has also been invited to speak as a part of an Trinbagonian panel for the 62nd Session of United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York City.[13]

Clarke has been an advocate for cultural exchange and collaboration between the Caribbean and Africa.[14]

She participated as a panelist at Afrochella, an annual celebration of African culture held in Ghana.[15]

At Afrochella, Clarke contributed to discussions on topics such as Black diaspora unity, cultural exchange, and economic development.[16]
