Tikola Kalan, also referred to as Tekaula Kalan or Tikola, is a village situated in Roorkee tehsil, in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, India. Located in the Garhwal region in the Shivalik hills of the Himalayan range of northern India, it lies approximately 58 km (36 mi) from Dehradun, the state capital, and around 157 km (98 mi) from New Delhi, the national capital.[2][3]

History

[edit]

Tikola Kalan was founded by an elderly man named Tikku Singh Pratihar Gurjar, who came from Rajasthan, and from whom the name derives.[4] According to local tradition, as recounted by the Bhats, the village is believed to be approximately 600 years old. The village is primarily inhabited by Gujjars belonging to the Pratihar clan, and the residents worship Gulab Singh Baba as their principal deity.[4]

Rise of new name Tikola Kalan

[edit]

Tikola is named after Tikku Singh. Tikku Singh had settled this village. People used to call this village Tikku Wala. Then it came to be known as Tiko Wala. Now its name has changed from Tikku Wala to Tikola. Due to the large population of the village, Kalan started being added to the name of Tikola, which is used by the Government of India for villages with large population.[5][6][7]

The primary occupations of the residents of Tikola Kalan are agriculture and brick manufacturing, as it is a significant source of bricks, supplying a substantial quantity to western Uttar Pradesh.

Tikola Kalan also has a Gram Panchayat that forms part of Narsan Panchayat Samiti, under the umbrella of Haridwar Zila Parishad. It exercises jurisdiction over a total of two villages.[8]

Culture

[edit]

The residents live according to the customs of Hinduism, but the Hindu Gurjars mostly worship Gulab Singh Baba Gurjar, who is considered a revered figure in the village. There is a khera(खेड़ा) temple in the village where people worship their ancestors, believing that they protect the village and its residents. During festivals like Diwali and Holi, people worship their family deities and ancestors (Devta) in their homes.

Agriculture

[edit]

The villagers are engaged in agriculture, which has been their traditional occupation since ancient times, and they have been associated with land ownership (or feudalism).

Language

[edit]

The majority of the villagers in Tikola Kalan communicate in Khari Boli as their native language, and also speak Hindi.
