Timothy Sheehy is an American aerial firefighter, businessman, and the Republican nominee for the 2024 United States Senate election in Montana. A former Navy SEAL, he was born outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota and grew up in Shoreview, Minnesota.[1] Sheehy founded Bridger Aerospace in 2013, an aerial firefighting and wildfire management company.[2] In June 2023, Sheehy announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate;[3] after winning the Republican nomination, he will face incumbent Democrat Jon Tester in the general election.

Early life

[edit]

Sheehy was born sometime in 1987 outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in Minnesota and grew up in a lake house in Shoreview, about 10 miles (16 km) 10 miles from where he was born.[4] Sheehy attended a private high school in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, graduating in 2004.

Military

[edit]

After graduating, Sheehy joined the U.S. Naval Academy and Army Ranger School. During his time in the Ranger School and the U.S. Navy, he sustained multiple injuries, and has admitted that he has lied about some of the facts relating to his gunshot wounds.[5] In 2014, Congressman Ryan Zinke awarded Sheehy a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.[4]

Bridger Aerospace

[edit]

In 2014, sometime after leaving the Navy, Sheehy founded the company Bridger Aerospace. Headquartered in Belgrade, Montana, it provides aerial firefighting services in 24 states and two Canadian provinces.[6] After founding the company, Sheehy was originally the only pilot, operating one plane and assisting ranchers with tracking cattle.[7] In 2024, Sheehy resigned as CEO in order to focus on his bid for the U.S. Senate in Montana.[8]

Politics

[edit]

In June of 2023, Sheehy announced he would be running against incumbent Senator Jon Tester for the Senate in Montana. Prior to his bid, he had no experience in politics, but became interested in politics in 2021 after the United States' withdrawal from Afghanistan.[4]
