Unnamed Memory is a Japanese light novel series by Kuji Furumiya. It originated from the novel posting website Shōsetsuka ni Narō in September 2012. It was later acquired by ASCII Media Works, who published the series with illustrations by Chibi under their Dengeki no Shin Bungei imprint. The series was published in six volumes, released from January 2019 to April 2021. A manga adaptation with illustrations by Naoki Koshimizu began serialization in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Daioh magazine in September 2020. As of August 2023, it has been published in five tankōbon volumes. An anime television series adaptation produced by ENGI premiered in April 2024.

Plot[edit]

Oscar, the crown prince of powerful country of Falsas, is under a curse that prevents him from having descendants; the curse will kill any woman who bear his child. Climbing the tower where the Witch of The Azure Moon resides and completing her trial, Oscar wishes that his curse be lifted. The witch, Tinasha, confesses that it is almost impossible to break the curse, but provides an alternative—to take a woman with great magical power that the curse unable to kill, as a wife. Oscar suggests Tinasha herself become his wife instead; she refuses, but agrees to accept Oscar's request to descend her tower and live in Falsas with him for a year.

The next heir to the throne of Falsas. A curse was placed on him preventing him from having an heir. To break this curse, he visited the Witch of the Azure Moon. Upon meeting her, he asked her to marry him.[3]

Tinasha (ティナーシャ, Tināsha)
Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki[2]

Said to be the most powerful on the continent. She is also known as the "The Witch of Azure Moon". She lives on the top floor of a tower in the middle of the wilderness full of many trials. It has been said that she will grant the wishes of those who reach her. Even though she looks like a 16-year-old girl, her body has stopped growing, and has lived for hundreds of years. Upon meeting Oscar, He asked her to break the curse put upon him.[3]

Light novels[edit]

Written by Kuji Furumiya, the series started as a web novel published on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō novel website in September 2012.[9] It was later acquired by ASCII Media Works, who published the series with illustrations by Chibi under its Dengeki no Shin Bungei imprint.[9] The first volume was released on January 17, 2019.[10] The sixth and final volume was released on April 17, 2021.[11]

In July 2020, Yen Press announced they licensed the series for English publication.[9]

A sequel series titled Unnamed Memory: After the End began publication on February 17, 2022.[12]

Manga[edit]

A manga adaptation, illustrated by Naoki Koshimizu, began serialization in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Daioh magazine on September 26, 2020.[1][26] As of February 2024, the individual chapters have been collected into six tankōbon volumes.[27] The manga is also licensed by Yen Press.[28]

Anime[edit]

An anime television series adaptation was announced on December 13, 2022. It is produced by ENGI, and directed by Kazuya Miura, with scripts written by Deko Akao, character designs handled by Chika Nōmi, and music composed by Akito Matsuda.[2] The series was initially scheduled for 2023, but was later delayed due to "production circumstances",[39] and eventually premiered on April 9, 2024, on AT-X and other networks.[4][8] The opening theme song is "Yōbigoe" (呼び声), performed by Tei, while the ending theme song is "blan_", performed by Arika, a music unit composed of voice actress Yūko Natsuyoshi and composer and guitarist Yamato.[40] Crunchyroll licensed the series.[41]

Prince Oscar and his assistant, Lazar sneak out of the castle to go on a mission to find the Witch of the Azure Moon residing on an azure tower to ask her to lift the curse cast on the prince by the Witch of Silence. The prince then goes through a series of puzzles and challenges upon climbing the tower's stairs. Midway through the stairs, it was revealed that the last person ever to climb the tower was the prince's great-grandfather, King Regius around 70 years ago. When the two enter the final room, two demon statues come to life and attack the prince and his assistant. After, the prince successfully defeats the statue, the floor beneath them starts to collapse leading Lazar to fall. The prince enters the door where the witch resides. He is greeted by the witch named Tinasha and offers her a cup of tea. The witch was surprised when he learned that the prince was related to Regius. The familiar of the witch noted that the price's assistant, Lazar was okay and sleeping at the bottom of the tower. Prince Oscar asked the witch to lift the curse that made every woman with the prince have a child to die. Unable to lift the curse, Tinasha proposed finding a woman who is strong enough to withstand the curse. Oscar finding out that Tinasha is strong enough to withstand the curse asks her to be his wife. Tinasha declines, but the prince persists. It was then settled that the Tinasha would live with the prince for one year.

Tinasha cast a spell on Oscar negating any magical or physical attack on him. While walking in the hallway with Lazar, she finds out that all the prince's cousins went missing leaving him as the only royal left. While walking in the hallway, she saves Sylvia from a falling chandelier with her magic who with Kav was lighting the chandelier with their magic. After finishing helping Lazar, Tinasha looked over the window and saw General Als and Meredina sword practicing, Tinasha then came over and practiced with Als. While walking in the hallway of the Castle, Her familiar, Litola, informs her of a surge of magic power in the magical lake in Druza, She asks permission from Oscar to investigate. Once they arrive at the lake, they find out that the Druza Mage, whose master was beheaded by Tinasha is trying to release a demonic beast sealed by her 70 years ago. After mentioning that Tinasha is the Witch of the Azure Moon, the soldiers are shocked by this. He began attacking the soldiers and wounding a few before fleeing. Tinasha again asked the prince to let her fight them and promised him to come back safely. Tinasha fights with the mage and kills him along with the mages trying to remove the seal except one. She removes the seal and tries to kill the beast. The beast bites her before she can cast the final spell after a fierce battle. The prince saw her dragon carrying her severely wounded, the prince called her mages to heal Tinasha. After some time, the mage noted that Tinasha healed herself but with the cost of accelerating her growth as her hair is longer than before.

After petting her familiar, Sylvia saw Tinasha trying to cut her hair with a dagger. Sylvia asked her to cut her hair for her. Oscar introduces Tinasha to his father, the king revealing that she is the Witch of the Azure Moon and his intention to marry her. Valt and Miralys were at the lake where they took the crystal that the beast dropped after the previous battle. A mysterious man arrives and tells them that he is trying to find Tinasha. The two try to leave but are subsequently stopped by the man who attacked the two. Valth teleported Miralys to safety leaving him to vaporize by the man. Oscar and Lazar escape the castle to go to the Byle Forest where nine villages were found dead where mysterious plants attacked them. The plant releases poison knocking out Lazar. A mysterious woman arrives later found out as Lucrezia, the Witch of the Forbidden Forest. After knowing Oscar's intention of marrying Tinasha, the witch offers the prince, an aphrodisiac to attract Tinasha. Oscar refuses, then Lucrezia gave him a curse which is later found to be a deadly curse sucking his life in his sleep. After returning home, Tinasha notices something strange with the prince. She first thought that he had not gotten any sleep or had a secret lover. She figured out that it was the curse that was put on by Lucrezia. She then scolded him and told him that she would break her curse when he was asleep. Later that night, Oscar was dreaming of being with Tinasha in bed, and he suddenly strangled her, he tried to stop himself but failed leaving Tinasha dead. Oscar woke up and was welcomed by Tinasha for breaking the curse. Oscar scolded Tinasha to not let him kill her even if it was a dream. Tinasha went to Lucrezia to scold her. Lucrezia then apologized and gave her Oscar's blood and semen and told her that Oscar cherish her. Tinasha went through Oscar's office to apologize.

Rebecca Silverman from Anime News Network praised the ending of the first volume and its illustrations, while also criticizing the start.[45] Demelza from Anime UK News had similar feelings, while also praising the characters.[46]

In the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! guidebook, the series ranked first in the tankōbon category in 2020.[47]
