Workshop: Bohemian Flats[edit]

Workshop Guidelines

Hi, I had a look over your article. Nice job. This reminded me of a couple of the Category:Historical New York City neighborhoods. I have a couple of suggestions, though. The introduction should be a summary of the whole article, and really shouldn't have anything that's not also explained more fully in the body of the text. See Wikipedia:Summary style. So maybe you want to expand on a couple of the things mentioned in the introduction. Another thing is that the claims of the real estate developers are sort of casually dismissed, and that's not quite fair under Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. Is there evidence they had a legal claim to the land? Were the residents indeed squatters or not? This should be explained better. And please be more specific about "unique culture" and "unique traditions"; these could be considered peacock terms. Also, you might consider linking to articles like floodplain and urban renewal. Thanks for your article.--Pharos 02:59, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi David, I'd like to nominate your article to be on the front page of Wikipedia at Wikipedia:Did you know, but I'm waiting until you have a little more content. You don't quite meet the guidelines for "Did You Know" yet, which require that an article be a fivefold expansion of the existing stub. Let me know when you get a little farther along with the article. 1013-josh 22:23, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

This is an important article, and I like that you are recording the history of a forgotten neighborhood. I admire how you’ve been able to organize the historical material so that it starts to tell a story. The quotes from the settlers are a great find, and they really help draw the reader into the article. I found the history of the area absolutely riveting, and I think you can use the facts to tell a compelling story about the neighborhood that resonates with the larger economic and cultural forces that affected its early history.
Beyond that, I’m going to hold off on commenting until you have more information. I think you’ve only scratched the surface of researching this material. Many sentences have been copy and pasted from other sources, and it doesn't seem that you've done enough reading to give them proper context. When you say “the lower terrace” or the “High Dam,” we don’t know what you mean. You’ve copied this information from the Minnesota Archaeologist article without explanation, and then we have to go back and read that article to see what “the lower terrace” is.
In sum, you have a great topic, you have some great sources, but you haven't done the work necessary in converting the source material into an encyclopedia article.
When you have done more research, let me know that you’re ready for me to take another look at the article, and I can provide more specific comments about content and form. 1013-josh 04:08, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Okay, Wilson has the Bohemian Flats book, so you should be in good shape. It looks like a history of the neighborhood that was written by the Federal Writers' Project in the 1930s, republished in 1986. It should be a good source for you. You may want to read about the Federal Writers' Project, so you have some context for who compiled the history. 1013-josh 17:19, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

hey david, I am trying to figure out some things you can do for me for your participation, so I guess you can really do whatever, you can rearrange/cut things in my article that may sound bad, or to one side(to accomplish a neutral point of view), or even just let me know what is bias to one side so i can fix it, and Im going to be writing another section on Marine Protected Areas, if you want you could find some good sources to add to article... so pretty much do anything I don't mind! And let me know what I can do for your article, I can do anything!! 1013- katie 21:59, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Good work. Remember to add a comment to the edit summary box to make it easier for other users to follow your changes. You may want to add the film page to your watchlist so you can see what becomes of your changes. 1013-josh 17:45, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

I am ok with doing the wikipedia project. i just need to find a good topic.

Okay, great! Remember to sign your posts on your talk page with ~~~~. Also remember to log in. You weren't logged in when you wrote the above line, and it shows up in the history under your ip address--a string of numbers--rather than under your user id. Let me know at any time if you change your mind and would like to switch to an off-line research assignment. As for finding a good topic, I'll be online all weekend if you want to toss around some ideas. Also, see ideas from Wikipedia users below. Environmental education might be an interesting topic. 1013-josh 18:34, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedians, if you're commenting specifically about the Bohemian Flats article, feel free to chime in in the "Workshop" section above.

Welcome!

Hello, 1013-David, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question and then place {{helpme}} after the question on your talk page. Again, welcome!

As you can see, there is already a Category:Nature centers, where you can find other articles of this type. Most of the articles in it aren't very long, and as your professor says, it might be difficult to write a full length article just on the Dodge Nature Center. Instead, you might want to consider writing an article about environmental education centers (or "nature centers", or whatever you will call them) as a general topic. We also have a very short article on environmental education that you might consider expanding for your project.--Pharos 04:20, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Topic ideas[edit]

If you're looking for a place to get ideas, you might check out Wikipedia:WikiProject_Biography/Core_biographies/Cultural_depictions_of_core_biography_figures. Wikipedia's biography project has identified 200 people as core biographies - people such as Napoleon, Albert Einstein, etc. - with an ultimate goal of prioritizing improvements to the site's biography articles of the most important people in history. I raised one of those pages to featured article status and in the process I branched off an "in popular culture" section into a featured list called Cultural depictions of Joan of Arc. A similar approach might benefit quite a few of those other core biographies. If this idea interests you, consult with your instructor. Best wishes, DurovaCharge! 17:43, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
