Hi Precious, I was just over at the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 page, and I found this book: Spear, Allan. Black Chicago: The Making of a Negro Ghetto 1890-1920 (Chicago, IL; University of Chicago Press, 1967). Hey Josh,

I'm trying to add a new section to my article, but everytime i put the information on there and save the page it puts my housing section under my references and it doesn't put the correct info on the page. It displays half of my info, with some other information. For example i tried to make a new section for "The Migration" right before the housing section, but when i go to the edit button for the new section it has housing information combined with it, i don't know what it's doing or if i'm doing something wrong but can you check it out for me. Okay, so I've looked at your article and I really liked it. The article is fairly clear and it addresses the issue of the Black Belt (region of Chicago). The article is broken up into several different sections which allows me to navigate easily to certain sections that I want to look at. So far, I think you have a lot of good information in the article. Some changes I would suggest making: (1) take a look at how I've referenced and made footnotes and maybe you could begin to format any other references/footnotes for sources that you get in the future; (2) add some images. Adding images helps "spruce" up articles and gives them "depth"; (3) also, try making subsections. A subsection goes underneath a main section. For example, if you were talking about Bears in a section, you could make a subsection about What Bears Eat. Otherwise, I enjoyed reading the article so far; very interesting. ...So I'm not sure what y'all have going on with workshop. Am I supposed to comment here? Or over at the article talk page? You seem to be doing a bit of both. I'll respond here. I think this article makes a significant contribution to the body of knowledge on Wikipedia. To be honest, I was very surprised when I saw there was only a tiny stub on the Black Belt neighborhood, given that it is such an important part of American history, and I'm proud that you and your group have taken on the task of expanding it into a full entry. I like how you've contextualized the article so that it provides a history of the Black Belt neighborhood housing conditions and political boundaries, but also reflects the Black Belt's position as the center of black culture in Chicago in the early to mid 20th century. My main suggestion for revision has to do with your section organization. I think you need a more logical structure. You have information such as this, "The Black Belt community was an area of aging, dilapidated housing that stretched 30 blocks along State Street on the South side, and was rarely more than seven blocks wide," in the Architecture/Housing section, when really it belongs above that, probably in the lead section, as it is part of the definition of the neighborhood. Similarly, you have this fact, "Between 1916 and 1920, almost 50,000 Black Southerners moved to Chicago," in the cultural contributions section, when I think it belongs up higher in the article, where you are explaining the Great Migration. So it's a matter of rethinking your article to decide when the reader needs to learn each piece of information. You might look at the Harlem article for an example. It begins with a brief definition, and then it goes to sections titled "Location and Boundaries" and "History". Having two sections like that at the top of your article would help, I think. I would be interested to hear much more about how the boundaries were defined and controlled. The brief history you give us of the CHA's 1946 action is interesting, and I'd like to hear more there. Other things that could improve this article would be a greater density of in-text citations (footnotes), a copy edit for sentence style and grammar, and adding many wikilinks to other Wikipedia articles. You might post a note at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago and let me them know that you are seeking feedback on your article. Good work. 1013-josh 15:45, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Final Edits

Okay Precious, I finally finished with all of the footnotes and references and the such and correctly formatted everything. Your article is coming along very well and I'm liking it. Check out the article's discussion page for more info on what I did to your article. Also, the article has problems with citations. There are a few places where myself and other Wikipedians do not know where you got some information and therefore tagged those sections with "Citation needed". Footnote #4 is unknown to me as well... I'm not exactly sure why you footnoted those and/or where you got the info. You're off to a pretty good start, given that this was a last minute change of topic. I think this will be a fun and useful article. Remember to keep it focused as much as possible on the neighborhood itself. The larger discussion about the Great Migration is appropriate as context, but the main focus of your article should be on the Black Belt neighborhood itself. Keep looking for more sources. There should be some print sources that discuss this if you go to the library and look for books on Chicago's African-American history.
