He then worked from 2003-2007 as a research assistant to Barbara Weiler (SPD), then a member of the European Parliament. Afterwards, he became a program officer of the regional SPD in Hesse and an advisor to the Social Democratic Association for Local Affairs (Sozial Demokratischen Gemeinschaft für Kommunalpolitik, SGK) until 2008 when he started working as a policy advisor on the economy, transportation, energy, regional development, and Europe at the SPD parliamentary group in Hesse. Before his entrance into the Hessian state parliament, Gremmels held the “Corporate Social Responsibility" position on the Management Board of SMA Solar Technology AG in 2009.

Gremmels joined the SPD in 1992. He then became involved with Jusos, the Working Group of Young Socialists in the SPD, and was the president of Jusos Kassel between 1997 and 2001 and, in 2002, subsequently became the Deputy Chairman of Jusos in North Hesse. He is on the Bundestag committees for economy and energy[2] as well as petitions.[3]

In 2009 had Gremmels acted initially as a replacement candidate for Ulrike Gottschalk, but during the state election in 2013 he would successfully defended the direct mandate of the SPD in Kassel with the nation’s best first vote results of 47.6%. Most recently, he was an energy spokesman and Deputy Chairman for the Hessian SPD parliamentary group. From 2001-2013 Gremmels was a member of the municipal council of his hometown Niestetal and, among other things, Deputy Chairman of the SPD parliamentary group there.
