History[edit]

Cuisinart started by Carl Sontheimer and his wife Shirley Sontheimer. The idea of starting Cuisinart came from seeing a food preparation machine in France, in 1971. After seeing the machine Carl Sontheimer, with his engineering knowledge and passion for cooking, wanted to spread the technology he saw with Americans [2] . Sontheimer started by taking apart the prototype machine and made refinements to parts such as the feeding tube, cutting blade, and discs[2] . After making the refinements, in 1973 Sontheimer introduced "The Food Processor" at the National Housewares Exposition in Chicago. In 1975 food authorities as James Beard, Julia Child, Craig Claiborne, Jacques Pepin and Helen McCully use Cuisinart products publicly[2] . Their promotion of the Cuisinart attracts consumers to invest in the product. In 1977 Cuisinart, with the market, experienced a big rise in sales going from a few food processors a month to hundreds[2] . Their first introduction to a product that is not a food processor was in 1989, a Mini-Mate chopper/grinder[2] . By 1988, Cuisinart was already the premier housewares brand, but The Sontheimers sold their company to a group of investors for $60 million[3] . After renaming the company from Cuisinart to Cuisinart Inc, the investors sold the company to Conair Corporation in 1989,still having the company today[2] .
