Gary Crusader[edit]

The Gary Crusader was founded in 1940[1] by Balm Leavell, Jr. along with his partner Joseph H. Jefferson[2]. In hopes to bring light on civil right movements, African American culture, and exciting news about their own community. In 1960 the Gary Crusader was adopted into the family of the “The Crusader Newspaper Group”[3] which also own papers in Washington D.C as well[2]. The Editor of the Gary Crusader is Sharon Fountain[4] working alongside with the current Publisher for the Gary Crusader, Dorothy Leavell is currently stationed in Chicago in their larger sister organization. She is a well-recognized Journalist, having earned her way into National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) in December of 2015[5]. The paper has a twice weekly print release while also maintaining a daily article update on their website, whiling having a print circulation of just over fifty-six thousand copies[6][4]. The Gary Crusader is the sixth largest Indiana newspaper, while also being the largest newspaper in Indiana for being and Ethnic based paper. Located just over 25 miles from downtown Chicago, it is well known in the Northwest Indiana[7] (NWI/ The Region being the nickname locals have given the area) region.

The founding dates vary from 1940 to 1960 on the premise that the information may of been for their "Big Sister" paper named Chicago Crusader. The confusion of when publication began, may of been an issue with information during the merger in the 1960's. While multiple sources will validate both dates, the information that is gathered from the company suggests that the correct date is 1960, although I am led to believe that that is the date of accrued ownership rather than the actual day of start publications.
